Show Heavy Mountain Snow Cover Betters Summer Water Picture The outlook for next summer's streamflow now Is excellent throughout Garfield County, reports, Kent Hortin, Soil Conservation Service, after completing last week's snow surveys. Although the fall months were somewhat lacking in precipitation, the December storms quickly made up for any deficiency. Following is a comparative report of snow conditions: DUCK CREEK 35" snow. 9.2" water; last year II" snow, 2.2" water; the average for the last 15 years Is 4.0" of water. HARRIS FLAT 24" snow. 6.5" water; last year 4" snow and 0.4" water; 15 year average for January 1st at this course is 2.0" water. LONG VALLEY JUNCTION - - 21" snow. 6.10 water; last year 7" snow and 0.6" water; 15 year average is 1.0" water. WIDTSOE ESCALANTE SUMMIT - - 28" snow. 7.0" water; last year 13" snow, 2.4" water. The 15 year average is 3.4" water. WIDTSOE ESCALANTE NO 2 26" snow, 6.0" water; hurt year 17" snow and 2.8" water. The average is 4.8" of water. WIDTSOE ESCALANTE NO. 3 33" snow, 7.8" water; last year snow 21" and 3.8" water. The 1948 - 1962 average is 7.0" of water. During December of 1967, 6.5 inches of moisture fell during the month at the Wldtsoe Escalante No. 3 course as did 2.55 Inches of moisture fall at the Widtsoe Ranger Station with approximately 8 inches of snow still on the ground. From these figures we appear to be headed for a good moisture season, according to Mr. Hortln, although the heavy precipitation months are still before us. |
