Show People Of Bryce And Bryce Valley To Be Given Opportunity Of Taking Glaucoma and Diabetes Tests A community wide health screening program for all the citizens of Bryce Canyon and Bryce Valley nrea will be held on September 20, 1967, at the Bryce Valley High School The tests will be held under the auspices of the Bryce Lions Club in cooperation with the Utah Society for the Prevention of Blindness, Inc., Garfield County Health Department and the Utah State Division of Health Screening procedures will be carried out for evidence o f diabetes and glaucoma The Diabetic screening will be con ducted from 4 to 6. The glauc oma clinic will be from 6 to 7 Both tests will take only a few minutes for each Individ ual There will be no charge for the glaucoma testing A dona tion of $1 00 or more will be requested to cover the expen ses of the diabetic screening clinic Early glaucoma and diabetes may exist without apparent signs or symptoms It is Important to diagnose these con ditions early so that adequate treatment can be provided The screening program will reveal only suggestive evidence of disease It will be necessary for the patient who is found to have suggestive evidence of di ;tbetes or glaucoma to visit his family physician for diagnosis Positive screening results will be reported to the patients fam lb physician The diabetes blood sugar test will be given to all men and women 35 years of age and over They will be asked to drink a known quantity of sugar in a carbonated beverage In two hours a small a mount of blood will bo taken from a vein in the arm After analysis at the laboratory of the State Division of Health in Salt Lake City, a person will be notified If there is need for further diagnostic tests The glaucoma test will be glWfl by an eye physician to everyone 35 years of age and over. It is done quickly and painlessly by an instrument called a tonometer, which measures pressure In the eye Glaucoma Is the most frequent cause of blindness in adults Anyone with a possible problem will be referred to a phy sician for further tests and treatment |
