Show Escalante Chit Chat BY FAY ALVEY Had another snow storm which kept the road crew out all night making the roads passable. Everyone survived the Christmas holiday in spite of the sleigh riding parties which caused bumps and bruises. A tragic accident happened Sunday, the 29th, during Sunday school ; Elthere Alvey, 84, was burning trash when her clothing caught fire and all burned except shoes and part of her stockings. She was there alone and Kevin Spencer passing papers saw her and summoned the neighbors, Mont and Ethyl Griffin and Erma Gates. They went for Nelda who gave her first aid and Dick Miller flew her to the Page hospital. Nelda accompanied her, and the family went by automobile. They reported 75 or 80 percent of her body burned, and she passed away Monday. Darrell Alvey went to Salt Lake for a checkup, they took the pins out of his arm but he still wears a cast. Vic Cottam and Glen Luellen collided at an intersection doing considerable damage to the cars and scratching them up some. Ray Adair died at the Panguitch hospital, Ramona went over to be with her mother, Mildred. Jim Gates is still at the Panguitch hospital, and Lamoine Pollock is hospitalized again in Page. Bill and Sharon Francisco and family were here for the holidays. Usher and Eva Spencer had Patsy and Garl Cottam and family here for the weekend, Lorin and Mel-etta Cottam came with them. The Senior Cottams are still working part time and seem to be in fair health. The Vic Cottams had son Delmarhome from Vegas. The family home of the late Hyrum Gates has changed hands; Cummings, Budd and Budd's son Harvey Dean and lady friends were here to finish the deal. Delane and Leah Griffin are the buyers, they want to come back and go into the cattle business. Nellie Bailey had Connie and Alfred Jepsen and family here from Calif. The Vincent Spencers had Danny and Lois and family and daughter Ka-thy here from Nevada. The Gail Baileys had Terrill and Koleen and family here from Cedar City. Billle and Minnie -Davis had Holbert and Bonnie Smith and son Robert from Cedar Citv and Al and Led a Mae Foster and family from Tronic. The Calvin Shurtz and the Daniel Cowles homes shared the visit of Dorthv and Newell Cowles of Richfield. The Ott Roundys had son Vernon Dean, wife Peg and two dau-gters. Gene and Renon Reed and daughters from Monroe here several days then all went to Monroe. Ron and Linda Mecham and kids went to Parowan, Sharon Dale and Shirley Marsh and daughter went to Cedar City. Mark Lis ton Is home after spending eight months la Vietnam, he has a thirty day furlough then will finish out his time in Colorado. Grant has daughter Marlyn and husband David Griffin home for the holidays. Shona Griffin went to Panguitch to visit her sister Caroline. Jay Porter went to Provo to spend Christmas with his mother, Mary, he says she is thin but has fair health. Jay came home with Joe and Rhode Allen and family who visited the Blake Robinsons. The Claron Griffins had Pauline and Dennis Lott and daughter Elaine. Morris and Neta Shirts hare Carol Joy and Art Cooper and family here from Texas. Whlt-ey and Maralda Porter have grandson Steven King here, he is on furlough from the Air Force. The Arthur Mcln-ellys have a new grandson born to Hal and Myrna Barker of Salt Lake City, the other Grandma, Nell Barker Is with them helping out. Don and Judy Kelly and family went to Wyoming. Thais Griffin and daughter spent several days in Panguitch with her parents, the Wllford Roes. Gam and Shirley Haycock and family of Tropic spent a day here. Fon and Starns Mecham spent a day in Tropic. The Ed Mitchells had son Garlan, Ruth Marie and the five kids here from Cedar City. Allen and La vlna Pollock bad son Guy, Vaunda and the three boys here from Richfield. Frank and Idella Inlay went to Fillmore right after the big snow but made It ok. Forest and Ruth Alvey visited in Marysvale and Richfield. A Riding club meeting was held at Whltey's cafe with Pros. Pratt Gates In charge. Arthur Mclnelly was elected president with Blake Robinson vice pres. and LaFaye Bailey held over as secreary. Stanley and Neta Havcock and daughters Janice and Donetta visited in Monroe. The Ernie Griffins had son Robert here. Bery and Retha Shurtz had son Carlyle and family here from Salt Lake area. Bill and Winona Bovle scent Christmas In Salt Lake with family members. Lovd and De-ma Gates liad business In Cedar Citv. Dale Schow was here with Dick, he was on furlough. Ferrell Roundy and famtlv were here from Calif. The Rol Porters had daughter Maxlnt Horrocks from Ogden, their daughter Dlaane was showing off a new husband. Our High school ball team went on a holiday ball trip. Don Shsrtt, Sharon Griffin Griffin and Jim Alvey went to Richfield for a MIA basket ball game. Warren Woolsey came from Missouri to spend Christmas and take his wife and two boys home. He flew to Cedar City and arrived one day a-bead of his luggage. It was good he was here to comfort his mother at the loss of her husband, Ray Adair. Brad Litton spent a few days here with Stan, Lois was here from Trade Tec. school in Provo. She said Lena did not get enough time off to come home, neither did Beth Robinson so they cried on each others shoulders for Christmas. Friends of a former resident, Warietta Porter got word from her in Las Vegas, she has a new husband who changed her last nsme to Per-ber. Jane Woolsey heard from daughter Vada Martin in Florida telling of her husband Edward being sustained as Bishop of a ward in Sarasota, Florida, he has been s member of the LDS church for seven yeare. John snd Lola Zens had a telephone call from her brother Fred Rhodes and wife Lois of Redding Calif, telling how they spent Christmas; they had three feet of snow which broke power lines snd msny buildings collapsed. They cooked Christmas dinner on a little camp stove and kept partly warm by the fire place. That country Is not equipped to handle such storms. In Sacrament meeting Sunday the North ward speakers were Warren Woolsey, Garl Cottam and Vsleree Shurtz sang. The South ward listened mostly to college students Linda Alvey, Terry Gates, Orena Mclnelly, Larry Litton, the two Blalncs, Lyman snd Willis, Pauline Lott, and Carol Joy Cooper, Carol Joy also sang. Jessie Morrill of Junction was here on business. A card from Alice Griffin in Las Vegas told of her family being together for Christmas, Mariln has been in the Navy but was able to join her and Joan and the baby girl. Alice has been baby sitting snd s companion for Joan as she is divorced. It Is quite different from working in s mission. Their last trip home the kids caught a 10 lb. 25 Inch long catfish from the Escalante Reservoir. She told of their experiences at the Hill Cumorah pageant where Martin was on the work crew and she cooked for them. Alice and family sent best wishes to everyone for s Hsppy New Year. Now that Christmas Is over our worries all should cease, but when those bills start coming hi those worries win increase. |
