Show I. . Neighborhood Youth Corps Proposed For Area The Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 was designed to provide means by which economically disadvantaged citizens might improve themselves and become self-sufficient. T h Neighborhood Youth Corps program was instituted under tliis act to help young people earn the means necessary to stay in school and get advanced training in the area of their choice. This program is designed to create jobs for young men and women between the ages of 16 and 21 whose families cannot help them get enough training to find and keep employment. The Garfield County School District is now engaged in filing application forms for such a program for our county. Under the present provisions of the Act our school board will pay 10 per cent of the total costs of the program oither in cash or in-kind. The Office of Economic Opportunity will pay the other 90 per cent. This assistance should provide employment for as many as 30 or more young men and women throughout the country. It is presently expected that most of the boys hired by the school board will be employed in and around our schools. They will help with all of the summer cleaning and painting in and around the buildings and work on the upkeep and bcautlfica-tion of the school grounds. They are hoping to hire sOmo girls to do clerical work in the district office. In order to provide jobs for .every young person who might be Interested and who can qualify the school district is attempting to involve every public agency in the county. Many have already been contacted and have indicated that they are eager to participate. Pooling the resources of each of our communities is going to provide us with a greater variety of opportunities for our youth, and will also give each nppllcant a much greater choice of work experiences and job training. |
