Mariah Adair got word she has a new granddaughter born to Frank and Deloa Sa- vage, formerly of Enterprise t but now moved to Boise, Id-I ' aho, they have a small son who is thrilled with a sister. Relatives here received word of the death of Earl Si-mons of Salt Lake, he has $ been ailing a long time. Don Coleman made, it home from $ Fort Lewis and, he and Lilll- an had business in Panguitch. Annie Alvey had a pleasant surprise when her only living sister Myra King, her single daughter' Lasca, both of Provo, and a married daughter LaWana Edwards and two children of Oreni came for a visit and stayed for dinner, they had visited in Cedar City and Bryce before coming here. Royal Alvey and wife came Sunday bringing daughters Qayla Jean ' Hale and Afton Branch, they left Afton to visit her husband's grandparents, Frank and Maggie Lay. The Garkane Telephone Co. held a meeting here last week under the direction of President LeGrand Heaton of Orderville, his wife OrvlUa accompanied him and visited and shopped during tho meeting. Mae Vonn Taylor and Ray Griffin went to Panguitch for medical checkups and had car trouble on the way home. Gwen and Randal .Lyman had son Dick and wife Mary, daughter Rosemary Palmer and husband Reldon and two children for the 24th, Joyce and Milton Woolsey and small daughter came for the weekend and Millie Mclnelly reported their car locked and abandoned on the Cottonwood road. Millie, and James came for the week end and got their kids who had spent the week herewith grandma Mary Lyman. Elma Mclnelly Is going' to attend a nursing school-' in .Salt,.,Lake Gordon Shurtz went to Salt Lake where he was married to Lorainc Lee of California, they met in Page and she had been here last winter to meet his folks. Gordon joined the Navy and left for California, he was promised the kind of schooling he wanted in this branch of the Service. Ivan Shurtz lias gone to Nevada to work with a survey gang under De-lane Griffin, he had to go to Panguitch for a physical examination, his mother Loret-ta accompanied him for a medical checkup. Doc and Katherine Pulsl-fer of Page were here for theweeknd, Lola Zenz accompanied them on a sightseeing tour of Boulder Mountain, Hell's Backbone and Posey Lake, they are the people who bought the Josey place from Dale Reynolds. Bernard Schow sold his home to the Palazola. folks who all ready live there. Garna Willis went to Salt Lake with her. aunt Gretha Twitchell of Cannonville, 6he went that far with Nell Henry Jeppson who was going to Logan for a Soil Conservation Convention, the other representative from this area is Lowell Willis who was already up North. A former resident, Worth Porter and family of San Diego, Calif, brought his camp house and came to visit, he talked in the South ward Sacrament meeting, he thinks everyone here has changed, gotten older but he has not, our other speakers were J.. Arthur and Carol Joy Cooper and she played a piano selec-'tlon. The North ward time was taken up by Bp. and Vernon Spencer and wife Rula, their theme was Genealogy. Stake Sunday School officers Dewey Willis, Elmo Bushnell and Wanda Shakespear visited both wards here Sunday. A Primary convention was held Monday In the South ward church under the direction of President Elda Haws. Our boys and horses are still winning honors: McKay (continued) ESCALANTF (continued) Bailey went to Marysvalefor the 24th and took 3rd placo in the calf roping; some of the local Riding Club members took horses to Fillmore for the weekend and Emeron Peterson's yellow horse Jocko took the one eighth mho witli Darrel Alvey as jockey; Arnold Alvey's Ash Can took the three eighth race with Darrel as jockey and Dar-rel's horse Joker tied for the quarter, and the boys won the relay race, they came home with eight trophys. Dee Haws took his horse To-to-go to Beaver and won a big race there. Recently some tourists from Texas stopped rt the Conoco station to refuel and planned to go back from whence they came, Lynn Gates advised them to stay overnight and make the loop to Boulder which they did, after their return home they wrote thanking him for. directing them to what they described as "the most beautiful country this side of Heaven". Forgot to tell you last week that we have three service stations besides a store that sells gas and supplies, by the way we also have a Post Office. So many folks came for the 24th, June Liston had her parents the Errol Dowd-ells and Mrs. Eva Tebbs of Panguitch and Lucile and Wallace Tebbs of Las Vegas; the Andrew Porters had Fay and lizzie Porter and son Dale and his wife from Provo; Bobby Griffin came from Salt Lake and was so filled with the holiday spirit he extended his visit, he was accompanied by son Wade and grandson Curt Ri-chess and a boy friend named Blake. The Afton Morgans of Cirdeville and their adorable baby were weekend visitors here. The 24th parade under tho; direction of Edson Alvey and Layton Griffin was the biggest and best in the history of Escalante, so the old timers say, Paul Steed's float with Indians and teepees, cowboys, covered wagons and pine trees took first place, the parade was followed by a program in the South ward church with Dale Marsh as M.C., it was a musical deal planned by Thelma Cottam. In the afternoon there was a children's dance followed by kids and pony races and there has bsen considerable kick and requests for printing them "about the prices charged for these races, they did not have the usual rodeo but the dance at night. Which is the most pathetic when the celebration Is o'er, the tattered crepe paper off the floats or the fellow who kept drinking more? - |
