Show Hey George, Look! By Byron Datlcs All the time we are more convinced the Cottonwood Road deserves more consideration than it has heretofore received from neighboring Kane County and the Utah Stale Road Commission. Thl shortcut for Utah to the empire on the Colorado River was made possible because the pioneer spirit still lives in Garfield County. The scenery along the Cottonwood Road Justifies its construction; milage saved for people who go to Glen Canyon further establishes the merit of this project, and now freight going over this route demands that it be maintained and improved by Kane County and the Utah State Road Commission. The lies, the transparent inadequacies and the stupid political attitudes of the officials who have so long and so strenuously opposed this proper road to Glen Canyon, It seems to us it is high time to pin their deceptions to tho "barn door". Couldn't Be Done Governor Clyde said this road was not feasablc, and when he made this statement he was midway through it, the State Road Commission said t couldn't be done, and the Kane County Commissioners wish it hadn't been done. Nonetheless, hundreds o f cars have traveled this road and they have all been appreciative of the scenery and shortcut arid now an Industry Is using this route to ..sh'PSO.tons pcrday from Utah to Glen Canyon. George Frandsen of Panguitch Is now hauling 17 tons of bentonite at a time over this road from the mill of American Mud and Chemical Corporation at Cannonvllle. When the high dignitaries from the State Capitol fly to Glen Canyon, of course they will go via Cottonwood for it is the shortest and quickest way. We hope they see George and his heavy truck traveling the road they said was Impossible. If they think It Is not possible to travel this road, and it is not worthy of any kind of assistance, may we suggest to the State of Utah they render to the Garfield County Commissioners the tax on gasoline that Is being used on this road, and Kane County turn in the B & C Road funds alloted for thli road, and if this wero done our nmmissioners would do much to maintain and Improve this essential highway. If these funds were grant-x-ed to Cottonwood the worthies who ignore and oppose this vital link to Glen Canyon could continue to do so wo would not care. |
