Show New Installation Helps CPl Mill To Better Production More Economy As a result of installation of a gang mill at the Crofts-Pearson Sawmill at Panguitch the utilizat on of the smaller diameter trees Is made possible in the Panguitch area of the Dxle National Forest, ranger Jack Large announced. The mill, a round log Donv inion Premier Type Gang mill, was completed in January '59. and runs one shift per day with a cut of 20.000 board feet. The mill can handle logs up to 25 Inches in diameter, but was installed primarily to handle logs from 8 to 16 inches in diameter The improvement is made by running tho small logs through the gang saw instead of the regular band saw as was done previously. Th's enables the mill to handle a greater volume of these small logs and do it profitably. Ranger Jack Large stated that the forest management program of the Dixie N.F. will be benefitted by being able to cut the small diameter disease and insect infected trees that are unfit for growing stock and which are utilizing the moisture and space that is needed for the better trees. By taking out these undesirable trees and releasing the moisture and growing space for the benefit of the more desirable trees, a better control over the various diseases can be expected as well as increased growth. |
