Show Tl 117 J r D I J Ry NETHELLA GRIFFIN I he Word trom boulder i t - ff . . "A veteran cow-puncher who has been riding the lower Es-'calantc t river for the past twenty years was being assisted by a newcomer the other yJay who pointed out two interesting - looking Moquoi houses under a high cliff. The old-timer confessed that he 'had never noticed them before. This is typical. Since, tour-f. ' ists have begun looking at our country with scenery -con-' ' scious eyes, they have told us of numerous remarkable attractions of which we were hitherto unaware. We knew of course that we had The Rattlesnake in Horse Canyon, The Lampstand and the Big Sinkholes in the Flats, the Sugar-loaf in Lower Boulder, also the Hogsback and Hell's Back-bone, and various natural bridges; but we had to wait for strangers to tell us aboui the 600 foot chimney rock in Coleman canyon and the triplicate arches, in a canyon under the window rock Jusi north of Burr Trail. We cannot say, of course, that the old timers did not notice these things. They probably saw them but did not 'consider them of interest comparable, say to a seep that could be dug out so that a horse might drink, or a ledge up which a trail could 'be chiseled that would lead to a grassy slope. Nothing except what cow could eat or drink was worthy of mention, unless It was of sufficient prominence to serve as a landmark. Now we are becoming beauty conscious, especially after uis 'photographers show us pictures of our land. Among ourselves, though, we still talK about how the grass is grow ing on the messas and whether the seeps are dry or wet. Mac and LeNora LeFevre became aware of the efflcen-cy of modern telephone service the other evening when they received a call from their son Michael in the. Kwajalin Islands. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Heine and grandson of Santa Ana, California brought a load ol building materials to use in the construction of their summer home in Salt Gulclj. The house is nearing completion.
