Of course, they didn't speak a word of French and, of course, they didn't know a thing about Paris. Tho only thing they did know was ,. that thoy vcro to take a train at 8:30 that evening from tho same station nt , which they had come In. They had been wandering about the city all day, It was 3 o'clock in the nftcrnoon, nnd 'i thoy wero pretty well starved. They wanted a square meal moro than. any- . . You get on the 'Metro,' see? that's French for subway and you go up to the 'Gnre du Nord that's French for a station and when you ' get there youH see a big sign, 'Amer- ican Red Cross Canteen,' and you go In there nnd they'll give you all you want to eat for nothing. No, you don't need no tickets to ride on tho Metro. When they come and ask for one I , jH just sny that French word, 'blesse' . that means wounded and they go right nlong and let me rido for noth- ing. They sure do like the Americans. You go on up to that 'Gnre du Nord.' t There's real Americans there that can speak English. They fed me there "H when I was broke like you. The Red Cross certainly do treat you right." "ZZZT |
