Show TURTIIFiE PRISONERS 8HOCKINQ CRUELTY PRACTICED UPON MEN AND WOMEN IN GEORGIA STOCKADE. Investigation Committee Finds That Unfortunate Inmates of Prison Are Brutally Punished by Superintendent. Atlanta, Ga. D. M. Vinlng, recently recent-ly suspended as superintendent of tho Atlanta City stockade, and Pete Cornet, Cor-net, a guard at the stockade, wero found guilty in the Superior court here on charges of assault and battery growing out of alleged brutal beating of Floyd Green, a negro convict. Tho indictment ngalnst Captain Vining nnd his whipping boss, followed fol-lowed an investigation of tho prison by a special committee of tho grand jury which created a sensation by reporting re-porting that tho filthy conditions and the cruelty practiced at tho stoefcado woro a disgraco to a civilized community. In tho report It was said men and women prisoners were cruelly beaten. Women, for trivial breaches or tho prison rules, tho report said, wero fastened to tho wall with iron hand rings, their feet barely touching tho floor, and left In that position until they fainted. In tho caso of tho negro, Green, It was testified that ho was placed in tho bucking machlno and given twen-tj-poven blows with a heavy leather strap. Green testified ho was unnblo to work the next day and for this ho was strung up to tho wall for more than two hours. Captain Vinlng is 73 yoars of age nnd has been superintendent of the Btockado 15 years. |
