An explosion oarly Thursday morning on tho British Brit-ish steamer Calrnrona off Dungonoss wrecked the women's quarters, killing ono child nnd Injuring a number of women and children. Tho steamer caught fire and a panic ensued, in which men fought for the possession of tho boats and had to be beaten back by tho crew to allow the women to bo taken off first. A large number of passengers were lnndod hero Thursday evening, many of them In an exhausted condition. In a'l, twenty wero seriously Injured, and not less thnn fifty were slightly Injured In-jured by the explosion and In the panic that followed. The Calrnrona sailed on Wednesday from London for Portlnnd, Maine. Sho carried 900 passengers, for tho most part emigrants, and a general cargo. A number of women with children In their arms were sitting on a hatch, when a violent explosion hurled them to all parts of tho deck. Some of them were shockingly Injured and one child was killed. Tho hatch was blown to fragments. A terrific panic ensued, tho omlgrnnts, mostly Russians, Rus-sians, running up and down, screaming nnd wringing their hands. Their terror ter-ror wns increased by the volumes of smoko that -poured from tho burning head. Tho captain and officers made Ineffectual efforts to calm them and then signals of distress wore sent up. In the meantlmo another explosion occurred oc-curred in the engine room, injuring several of tho engineers. Tho Kanawha Kanaw-ha and Upland steamed up quickly and tho captain decided to transfer all the passongors. This was accomplished accomplish-ed speedily, but was accompanied by scandalous scenes. |
