In tho fall of 1907 I built a crib and granary with driveway between and concreted tho floors of both crib and grannry, writes a farmer In tho Kansas Kan-sas Parmer. They havo been used for storing two crops and If I were to build a dozen cribs and granaries I would uso no other floor for several reasons, viz.: It Is rat proof, fully as cheap or cheaper than lumber, economical eco-nomical of space, as no joists are necessary, and everlasting If properly constructed. My building Is on n rock foundation put well Into tho ground, and laid In cement mortar, tho sills being bedded bed-ded In cement mortar. Delow tho Bpaco intonded for tho floor proper I tamped In fully a foot of cinders, bringing bring-ing theso up to tho bottom surface of the floor; over this I tamped firmly ' - ' :y. -... Anchor Rod. tho floor from 3V& to 4 Inches thick, composed of ono part Portland cement, three parts coarse sand, nnd five parts broken rock. If thoro is a better grain floor In Lyon county I do not know who owns It. I havo a room floored In the samo way for our cream separator, separa-tor, also one In our henhouse. They aro all right, and no mlstako about it. Here aro tho details qt my plan for concreto floors: A point of Importance la to anchor tho allla co firmly that thoy can not bo sprung away from tho concrete by the weight of grain against tho Bides of tho building. My plan was as follows: To rod the sills togother with, say, one-hnlMnch Iron rods, tho concrete to surround vho rods. Perhaps the following Illustrations will servo to show what I mean: Ily "ti" sills I mean a two by four or two by six laid flat In cement on fw wall and ono of samo dimensions placed on edge of tho flat piece. Of course the rill . muBt bo frame and well spiked before being placed on the wall. The stud-" stud-" ding may bo framed and when 2 placed on the sill C It appears as In " Fig. 2; 1 being mJmmmm tho foot of stud, 3" 2 tho vertical por tion, and 3 tho flat i ii i t portion of sill. Tho anchor rod should pass through 3 and the floor surfaco be flush with 3. |
