Tho shooting occurred over a squatter's claim which had been located locat-ed by Walter Long, and later taken up by John A. Hayes, on tho ground that Long hnd abandoned tho claim. Lont, and soino of his friends wnrncd Hayes to leavo within twenty-four hours, according ac-cording to tho evidence at the coroner's coro-ner's inquest, and when ho returned they attacked the cabin In which ha lived, killing Hayes and his 11-year-old daughter. At tho Inquest Mrs. Hayes positively Identified Walter Long nnd his brother Mllo as among tho attacking party. 8ho said that tho attacking party camo to tlio cabin at 1:30 In tho morning. morn-ing. Hayes, who was on tho watch with ono or two of his neighbors, called out, asking what was wanted. Tho reply was a volloy of shots. Hayes and his forco ropllcd with rovolvors, but at tho next round from tho attacking party, Hayes received a bullet through tlio chest. Ho lived about flvo minutes, and nnothcr bullet went through tho cabin nnd struck his datightor Augusta, who died before a physician could rench the sceno. Tht coronor's jury found that tho shooting was dono by Mllo Long, Walter Long, Charles B. Gamble, George D. Isbcll, Tucker C. Moore, John L. Johnson nnd othors unknown. It was bellovcd thoro wero about twenty In tho party. Sheriff Small of Valley county, hoa placed theso and ten othors under nrrest, and thoy aro now In tho county Jail. Thoro Is a very bitter feeling over tlio affair, and further troublo is feared. |
