Show WILL ULD ROAD TO SALT LAKE Vanderbilt Road to Extend Railway From Lander, Wyoming, to Utah's Capital. Deal Made Which Will Give the Northwestern an Outlet to the Pacific Coast Over the D. & R. G. and Western Pacific. Now York. Tho Chicago & Northwestern North-western railroad, a Vanderbilt lino which hns boon "pocketed" by tho Pacific Pa-cific coast extension ot tho Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul, has, It is learned, bought a largo stock Interest Inter-est In tho Denver & RIo Grande. Tho current report In Wall street is that the Northwestern quietly picked up a block of 120,000 shares of Denver common In, tho open market whllo that stock was ranging between 35 and 46. At an nverago of 40, this would represent nn Investment of about $5,000,000. An Interest ot this sort would pormlt tho Northwestern to gain an outlet to tho Pacific const over tho lines of tho Denver & Bio Grando and Its' Western Pacific, which wll bo completed this fall between Salt La1o and San Francisco, and Is partially in operation now. Tho Northwestern would hnvo to do somo building on Its own account to mako a physical connection with the Gould lines. Its present western terminus Is at Lander, Wyo., but It has always been understood that tho road was going on southwest to Salt Lako City, and that tho bonds which It authorized somo Unto ago woro partially . reserved for that building purpose. Slnco tho St. Paul built Its own lino to tho coast and tho Chicago, Chi-cago, Burlington & Qulncy bought control -of tho Colorado & Southern, the Northwestern has been shut In and robbed of opportunity for expansion. expan-sion. Tho Gould alliance, would bo about tho best arrangement it could make. |
