Starting In a barn, persumably from a carelessly thrown clgarotto, fire Saturday aftornoon aftor-noon destroyed property in tho south em portion of Fort Worth, valued at from $2,500,000 to $3,000,000, caused tho death of at least ono person, J. J. Newton of Krum, Texas, and rendered ren-dered sovernl thousands' of persons homeless. The tiro originated at Jennings avenue ave-nue and PetorBmith street, in tho con ter of tho fashionable residence district, dis-trict, nnd, fanned by a stiff wind, wns beyond control within fifteen minutes. Spreading to tho south, It burned its wny through thirty-two blocks! and continued until It had swept through the yards of tho Texas & Pacific railroad rail-road buildings nnd a largo amount of rolling slock, whero tho fire practically practical-ly burned Itself out. Threo church buildings, tho Broadway Broad-way Baptist', Presbtyerlan and tho Swedish chapel, wero aiiiong the buildings destroyed, ns was -tho Pros-bytorlan Pros-bytorlan sanitarium. Tho patients of tho Intter Institution wero all removed re-moved in safety. Thousands helped in an effort to rescue housohold goods, but their of-forts of-forts worFto little avail becauso the wind was blowing a gale and carried tho flames for blocks ahead of the actual ac-tual conflagration. The flght was largely centered at the, depot of tho Texas, & Pacific railroad. Horses and buggies laden with refugees re-fugees wero cut off by flames and hnd to be abandoned In the streets |
