| Show TOPPLING G OVER legislation Is rapidly reaching the point in the united states where it Is taking the government away from the fundamental principles laid down by our forefathers so many laws are being passed in the various states that the rights of the people are being subjected to new restrictions each year A I 1 recent survey to the laws passed in he various states ot of the union revealed the tact fact that measures were enacted into law in a single year when we pause to consider that the liberties ot of the people were guaranteed in the original constitution we are forced to conclude that by tar far the greater number 0 of these new laws abridge rather than perpetuate the spirit ot of liberty A study of the bills considered at the present session ot of the utah legislature will reveal that comparatively few 0 of the measures adopted pertain to matters affecting the public as a whole the greater portion of 0 our legislation Is devoted to class strife one class seeks protection from another and the legislature Is the medium which says whether or not these protections or discriminations shall be written into the laws in this age there Is little public clamor for new laws the desire and requests tor for new laws originate with minorities the public is forced to tight fight objectionable measures which is the chiffin chief ia terest erest it holds in the average state legislature of the present day it if we could abolish legislatures preserving the rights and liberties whick marked the founding of the nation ind and the several states the public as a whole would be spared considerable su yering we cannot continue to pass thousands of laws each year without restricting the public class clashes render no particular benefit to the people as a whole and legislatures should not be maintained simply tor I 1 the purpose durpos a of providing a battle ground for the classes who would retain old advantages or gain new ones perhaps there Is some merit to the nevada sentiment which seeks to abolish its legislature commission if the commission so sub were prohibited from meeting except when authorized by publia petition democracy n might be rid of one ot of its perplex perplexities atles telegram |
