Show The Zulu War Cry. Tho Zulu war cry, UHod whenever they tako tho Held by tho South African Afri-can footballers now In London, has puzzled our newspapers, not ono of which sceniB nblo to spell It correctly, says Notes and Queries. Tho Dally Express gives It as "lgamllzho," nnd tho Dally Mall as "dammlllo." Tho cry really consists of two words, and should bo written "Igamn layo." "Igama" Is Zulu for "name," and "layo" Is a possessive pronoun, meaning mean-ing eithor "his" or "their." Thus the Dally Mall, although qulto wrong In ItB orthography of tho cry, Is right In saying that It merely means "That is his name." The explanation is that Zulu etiquette does not allow warriors, when they rush Into battle, to mention men-tion Jho names of their enemies, but tho leaders shout out, "That In his name," pointing to the victims with their spears. |
