Show I Third Term Platform. Following is tho platform adopted by tho lloosevclt Third Term National Lcagno: Wo, tho members of the Roosevelt Third Term National League, having at heart tho great social and political problems prob-lems now confronting tho people, and In order that the rights of tho masses be protected and that national harmony be preserved, deem it imperative tbatThco doro Hoosevolt ho ro-dected to tho Presidency in 1908. Wo have come upon days In our social and political life, fermenting with dls trust and requiring firm control. Wo view with alarm tho evils already grown from tho fib u so of corporato power and sco in these evils a fertile field for tho demagogue, from which might reud ily spring a political and social revolution, revolu-tion, and bellevo that nothing short of tcmperato and prayerful solicitude, on tho part of the pcoplo, will hold our poll tlcal and social structure intact. To tho pcoplo Irrespective of party lines is due tho credit that their President, Presi-dent, to-day, Is Theodora Roosevelt. A now era of real freedom and vitality In our institutions of government and poll tics was demanded, and they wisely saw in him a means to attain it, 80 valiantly and wholeheartedly has this man refloated the wishes of the peo 1 pie, that his personality has entered Into and becomo a part of every department of our national life. Ho has won the coufldcnco of tho people; peo-ple; and this fact alone, makes htm tho most potent factor in tho solution of tho present disturbing conditions To eliminate elimi-nate this personality which is to eliminate elimi-nate that confidence at a tlmo when tho people, as a whole, aro restive and trembling trem-bling with apprehension, Is to Invito national disorder. So closely woven is this bond between tho President and tho people, that he has become to them a public ncceislty, an essential part of things In the social and political fabric. Therefore, Theodore lloosevclt is not only the ono logical can-dldHto can-dldHto for nomination, but manifestly Is tho only logical President for tho pcoplo. Already has it been demonstrated that tho frightened and vengeful wealth controlling con-trolling forces of the country, will resort to any means to defeat his nomination for a Presidential Third Term. Wo, therefore, mut be on tho alert and quick to action if wo would save that which has already been accomplished by our Illustrious President. Wo arc not unmindful of tho fact that Theodore Hoosevolt himself declared In 1001, that "under no circumstances would lie be n camllduta for, or, would he accept another nomination." Wo challenge, howevor, his right to refuse to accept the Presidency of the United States for a Third Term, in the face of tho people's demand, especially nt a time when so ninny undertakings of the highest importance have been brought about ami set In motion by him, and so subject them to thu danger of an untried and unproved successor, to whom public confidence would be reluctantly extended, if at all. Manifestly, tho selection of Its President Presi-dent rests with the people The public, alone, Is judge. No man may say he will not uccept. It Is not tho province of Theodore Itaosevclt to say ho will or will not bo tho President, He, who acts as President, acts solely as a servant of the pcoplo. and when called by them, must come. Wo further hold, that In point of fact his re-election in 1008 would not constitute consti-tute a Third Term. HE HAS BEEN ELECTED TO THE PRESIDENCY HUT ONCE. Inasmuch, however, as tho Issuo has been so generally spoken of as a Third Term, tho League has adopted the title. We, therefore, in tho interest of public welfare, demand thatThcodoro Roosevelt be nominated for tho Presidency and ba re-elected In 1908, and to that end hereby plcdgo our support. Edwaiid A. HoitNF.n, President. B.C. Havkk, Secretary. N. B. Tho Secretary of tho League would like to hear from everybody Interested Inter-ested In the progress of this movement. Address E. O. Hayek, Secretary, Koosvclt Third Term Nattoual League, Tribune IJulldlng, Chicago. |
