Show 1 AN ARGUMENT FOR THE TEACHERS the state farm bureau through its tax taie committee has addressed a letter to the state board ot of education asking tor for retrenchment in the matter of handling the public schools in order to lessen taxes while there may be Bome some Abuses in the handling ot of school I 1 W atun di through c careless e vf equipment after reading the letter i one who has the future welfare of his children at heart and who wants to see them equipped to meet the world on an equal footing when they are thrown on their own resources can only think that the state farm bureau has greatly overreached itself in making its recommendations retrenchment tre trench ment in the matter of taxes should be undertaken wherever possible but when a body asks ask the county commissioners commissioner s of the state to make that retrenchment at the expense 0 the children of the state it appears that that body must be composed of about as narrow a lot of incompetents as could be gotten together ten to one these same men are using every endeavor to house and improve their livestock so that it will bring them tile the greatest returns and in so doing they spend hundreds of dollars on barns and conveniences yet they are so blind that they cannot see that the generation of boys and girls must be equipped with all that modern education can call give them in order that the they will make a proper showing when they get out in the world and mingle with the educated ol of other states the recommendation that fewer teachers be employed per capita of school children and that the age limit tor for school children be reduced Is the most asinine ignorant bigotry and it is no wonder that the business world smiles when anything is said about farmers organizing aud and doing business tor for themselves it if this la Is a sample of the height ot of the farmers vision the greatest fault of our school system today is that so many think a school teacher can live on the same cash income as a farmer they do not stop atop to think that a teacher must wear presentable sen table clothes in fix order to set an all example before the scholars neither do they stop to think that the school teacher Is compelled to pay out c cash h wr fir everyn every and convenience con venieNe from the food they eat to the bed they sleep in then they only receive pay for or a part of the year and must live between school terms it la Is doubtful doubt tul it the net income ot of nine tenths of the school teachers in the state is that ol of the common sheep herders gerders her ders and yet the farm bureau has the audacity to ask that retrenchment be made in the matter ot of salaries and at the same tim time emore more children bo be piled into the school rooms under one teacher thus lessening lesseul ne that teachers ability to do the children justice in their education bah such rot Is tantamount to anarchy and Is a direct blow to the very foundations ot of american government and ideals san juan record march 3rd ard |
