Show F E E D TF G W WHEAT 9 t ta profitable I 1 ABLE kendic kenneth i th C ikeler hero two general hypps types I 1 of farming namely mely the grain farmer and the live stock farmer the grain farmer sells ills crops the livestock farmer feeds them the latter markets lits his crops on four legs rather than on tour four wheels there have been some economists who maintain that it Is IB an economic waste to feed grain to live stock and that it should bo be almost entirely reserved for human consumption the countries of russia hussla and indio india practice to cons considerable id erable extent such a program the english speaking nations feed large amounts of grain grald to live stock as aa the best methods of marketing grain surpluses and to maintain soil fertility 0 there is no doubt but that a surplus of wheat Is responsible for its present low price it la Is doubtful if any farmer can afford to sell wheat eat for as little as seventy cents a 9 bushel it would seem that the best thing to do with seventy cent wheat la Is to feed it the severe drought that has prevailed v in the corn belt has undoubtedly reduced the teed feed supply there this will mean that those agents will be iinallo to feed the usual large number of cattle and lambs that are grown in our intermountain region this fact should lead us ua to the consideration of feeding this year a larger number olour of our cattle and lambs in this area wo we shall probably have our normal amount of alfalfa and barley to app apply y to the home feeding of our live stock the additional cattle and lambs that will probably need to be fed in our state this year will call for additional grain to give them a desirable market finish here Is where we can c an use our cheap surplus wheat to good advantage 4 1 and how about wheat for the feeding 4 of livestock live stock and how does it compare I 1 alth barley at enroe utah during the winter of 1928 1029 alfalfa and whole wheat fed lambs required pounds pound of hay and pounds of wheat to make one hundred pounds of grain as aa compared to pounds of at hay bay and pounds of whole barley the profit per lamb was fourteen cents per head hea dmore more in the case of the wheat feed lot last year the wheat fed lambs made s i the same gains as the first year let I 1 us note that it la Is unprofitable to grind wheat for lambs their teeth can do I 1 cheaper than we can do it tor for them it cheaper than we can do it for hem tor for feeding cattle when it is cheaper than han barley ba aley or corn but it should be ground but not so tine fine as to lecome become pasty in the mouths of cattle wheat does not seem to be quite so appetizing tor foi cattle as it ft is to lambs but the former make satisfactory gains on it inasmuch as cattle have a tendency t eo d ncy to tire on a sole ration toward I 1 the jhc e close of the feeding period the results of many experiment stations show wheat to be equal to barley or corn pound for pound in the fattening of cattle the writer believes that both cattle and lambs will return more than the present market price of wheat it Is to be regretted that the farmer of the intermountain country country does not produce more hogs we have both the feeds and markets market to make them 2 pay not too finely ground wheat is appetizing to hogs bogs and they make efficient gains on it experiment stations eions shave have found ground wheat to be slightly superior to shelled corn in putting gains on hogs this station Is conducting now a hog feeding experiment peri ment comparing ground wheat with ground barley thus far the results of the two lots lota are very biose close and the complete story will be ready about october first and one word more about hogs they respond to the ti 10 same good treatment and sanitation as do 10 the other classes of stock given these they will make the money does not soe s a more practical method of marketing surplus wheat in this area than by feeding it to live stock that it compares pound for pound with wilh barley and corn for the feeding fe ediLl of cattle c lambs and hogs there is no doubt the feeding route lu la probably the most powerful method of at marketing the present surplus wheat crop this is especially Y true since the corn crop is materially reduced by drought in the middle west the feeding of wheat will help the federal farm board solve the surplus problem |
