Show THE POLYSOPHICAL"FORNITST." Academy Students Argue Best on the Bigrht Side of the Woman Suffrage. Resolved, That the women of the state of Utah shall have equal suffrage with men. That waa the subject of the debate at last evening's sessioa of the polv-BODhical polv-BODhical society held at the B. Y. academy, aca-demy, and a large attendance wa3 out to hear the debate. The negatives won the debate. It was bo declared by viva voce vote or the audience and by the first findings of the committee of three appointed as judges. Two of the judgeB are pronounced pro-nounced suffragists and they brought in what was called a majority report, but what was in reality a minority report re-port in favor of the affirmative speakers. speak-ers. The speakers for the affirmative were : Murray King, Daniel Kasmussen, Chauncy Spillsbury, Parley Magelby and Sam Clark. For the negative: F. J. Basch, E. K. Fillerup, S-J. Jones, Wm. Kerr, and Bert Olson. All are students in attendance upon the academy. Eeach spoke for ten minutes only. The judges were P. D. Houtz, A. 0. Sinoot jr. and J. D. Jones. During the procress of the debate each judge alone took notes and marked percentage on general appearance, on delivery, on composition and on point3 made. Judge Jones tells it that when the judges retired they added these percentages per-centages together md took the average aver-age of all on each side. Of the two averages av-erages thus attained, that in favor of the negatives was the highest. Messrs. lloutz and Smoot would not abide I y this and prepared a majority report in favor of the affirmatives and Judge Jones "took the bull by the horns" and made hia own report. It transpired tran-spired that while the judges were out consulting, the house took a viva voce vote which was overwhelmingly strong for the negatives. The joke was on Suffragists lloutz and Snrot. The audience was enthusiastic and enjoyed well the able manner ir. which the speakers on both sides treated the subject. After the debate son.e beautiful vocal and instumental musical selections selec-tions an J recitations were rendered. |
