Show I The New York Times has had another an-other virulent attack upon Hon, Georce O. Cannon. ThP Timoo ; sintent if it is not truthful. The assertion asser-tion that the Mormon church is in debt to the extent of $1,000,000 is a monstrous statement and cannot possibly pos-sibly be sustained. Let the Times go for Hon. George Q. just as much as it pleases, but we can Bee no reason why it should jump upon the Mormon church, even were Mr. Cannon a far worse man than we have ever heard I mat ne was. However, Mr. Cannon seems to wield a most powerful pen and he will take care of the Times' man. There seems to be a great curiosity curi-osity as to who the writer of the Times' articles, Is, but that makes no difference, differ-ence, we can only have to do with the subject matter of the letters itself. Of course Mr. 'Cannon must purge himself of these charges because of his prominent poaition in the church. He cannot afford to let them go (unanswered and doubtless it -will be very easy for him to vindicate himself him-self , and no one will blame him if he (occupies a good deal of space in the papers in this work. Mr. Cannon, notwithstanding his prominence in the church and in society, must 8ho v up a clean record as one of the stewards of a great church, as one of the custodians of its resources as well as one of the pillars of its defense. The Prince of Naryaz June of India doesn't think the mints of India will ever be re opened again. He eays be- j fore silver was demonetized ten rupees in silver were worth an English pound, but now it takes seventeen rupees to buy an English pound. That is a very fair statement of the cape and it is a graphic picture ot the profit England had in demonetizing silver, at least in India. This ought to make a strong plea for silver at the cominz European conference. It represents a clear gam to Britain of 7-10 of a pound in every pound of Bank of England notes sent for any purpope to India. We don't know anything about the muscular qualifications of the Marquis of Queensberry, but we do know tb'at he offered Oscar Wild a cowardly insult and he ought to be whipped as a puppy. The great Sun Flower apostle is evidently evi-dently not a man of courage or he would take a cane and go hunting for Mr. Queensberry. Ock Thurman finds something :ven in the convention to laugh at. If we are not mistaken the people will laugh at the constitution when it is completed comple-ted do anything Eave vote for it. If they go to putting all the old woman trumpery into it, which is demanded, it will not be elected. It may be that part of the animus of the Cannon attacKS, is due to railroad rail-road jealousy but we do not feel Inclined to accept that theory. That would be far beneath the altitude of the average railroad promoter. Tle constitutional convention at the rate it is going on, would require three years to get up even an ordinary constitution. consti-tution. It isn't getting its legs under it, even p. littu bit. , J . MB The Spanish gove; .tnt hasn't as yet subdued h :. C-ban rebellion. The indications are rather that the Cuban rebels will yet subdue the Spaniards. Having once answered the charges published in the Times Mr. Cannon is now compelled to meet them as tbey come. |
