Show DASTARDLY AFFAIR. A Jtaan at Giiester, San Pete County, Assaulted snd Outraged by a Disguised Tramp, and Left for Dead. The People Excited and a Lynching Bee Threatened Threat-ened the Perpetrator. U. S. Deputy Marshal B. Bachman I was summoned by telegraph on Mou- j day evening to San Pete, where a most dastardly crime had been committed com-mitted by a tramp, who, if fouud, will not be permitted to live long enough to answer for his crime before the bar of justice. Mr. Bachman returned last evenirg, and, in conversation with him, a Dispatch reporter learned the details of the outrage. It appears that on Monday afternoon ab;ut 3 o'clock, a tramp heavily disguised called at the house of Mr. Frank R. Candland, at Chester, and demanded of Mrs. Candland, who was alone, the keys to the trunk. Mrs. Candland was very much frightened, but refused to comply with the demand. He seized her by the throat and threw her to the floor, and after a severe struggle, strug-gle, as is shown by marks on the lady's hands, face and breast, outraged her. He then snatched the rings from belli bel-li ngers and took two loaves of bread, leaving his victim unconscious, where she was found by a neighbor. The husband of Mrs. Candland was at work two miles away. Officers and men are scouring the country. The latest advices are to the effect that a rn.au was arrested at Moroni yesterday on suspicion. He will be taken to Chester for identification. Certain indications are they have the right man. The outrager had cotton prepaid pre-paid with chloroform. There is intense in-tense excitement, and summary justice is threatened the wretch. Later advices ad-vices state that the affair caused a miscarriage, and that the poor woman is in a very dangerous condition, |
