Show THE EARTH TORN To Shreds and Flung High Up in the Air BY A BURNING GAS WELL Yesterday Was a Decidedly Interesting One in the Senate Hill Defended Cleveland and Oaffary Gave Away Some of the Secrets of Legislative Tinkering COFFEYVILLE Kan July 24 Between Be-tween one and two oclock this morning morn-ing Coffeyville experienced a subterranean subter-ranean explosion strongly resembling an earthquake which terrified the citizens citi-zens for miles around and caused much damage Just north of town is situated a strong natural gas well About the time mentioned several distinct explosions ex-plosions rapidly following one another awoke the startled citizens who jumped out of bed to find the town I illuminated The earth trembled perceptibly per-ceptibly shaking buildings and causing caus-ing china to rattle while showers of rocks could be seen bursting from the well Huge rocks were hurled high into the air and descending crashed into the cottages in the neighborhood of the pit The rock weighing fully thirty pounds fell through the roof of a house and barely missed tue occupants As tar as known however no one Iwas hurt Daylight disclosed a dismal sight For thirty acres around the well the earth was torn ap as it by a volcano tinge boulders lay uowutTwbile several holes many of them biteen to thirty feet deep showed whence they came Houses had been shattered tarns toppled over and masses of earth appeared ap-peared where Lelore the ground was level The strange phenomena is unaccountable unac-countable IN THE SENATE WASHINGTON July 24Another dramatic scene occurred in the senate today but President Cleveland instead in-stead of beiug as on yesterday the object ob-ject of attack by the leader of his party was defended with vigor and vim Mr Clevelands champion today was his old political rival and enemy Senator Sen-ator David Bennett Hill of New York The New York senator spoke almost two hours to breathless galleries and a tu J senate Several times the presiding officer was unable to restrain the enthusiasm his remarks evoked notably when Mr I Hill declared personal considerations would not prevent him from defending the president when he was unjustly attacked at-tacked He defended Mr Clevelands letter his right to semI it and the sentiments it contained and made a strong point against his adversaries when the pointed point-ed out that they criticised the president for siding with the house when they admitted they had used all their influence influ-ence to induce him to interpose in behalf be-half of the Senate amendment to the tarrift bill He took up Mr Gormans argument and met it point by point in a manner satisfactory to liiuieeif at least and concluded i with a piece of satire that stung those on the floor and ticKled the galleries Mr Caffery who followed Mr Hill with a brief speech also gave to the country his share of the secrets of the political prison house lie detailed the manner In which the sugar schedule had been prepared insisting it was made by ana in the interest of the sugar trust He then gave way in order to give the democrats a chance to caucus Altogether it was a very exciting day and the indications are that others as interesting will tollow |
