Show GOD BLESS THE OLD FOLKS thursday august 26 1920 was old folks day da all the veterans residing in box elder stake were on that day taken to the beautiful lagoon resort in automobiles the compliments ments 0 athe automobile owners of the stake the day was ideal the sun was shining brightly the heavy rain the day before had cooled the air and settled the dust as soon as the old folks were safely home the rain and storm again broke forth with renewed force from 8 to 10 A 1 M I the road from brigham brigha rn city was lined with cars placarded pla carded box elder old folks bound for lagoon passing the sand ridge south of ogden some of 0 the aged people lid bad not seen this place tor for many years and wondered at what they saw about 25 tents an army of 0 men working there hundreds of rails piled up the drivers explained that this was one move of governor Bam bergers work for or the state of utah the government had tor for years been looking for a suitable place to erect a large arsenal for storing the government powder guns etc where it could be obtained by t the he most railroads in case ot of war our governor saw the point at once that it if the arsenal was erected in utah it would give employment to a great many of our people and convinced the government agents that a better place than the sandridge of utah could not bo be found his word was consequently a most wonderful city is being erected on the sandridge contracts already having been let tor for 75 buildings arriving at lagoon the old people found the tables placarded pla carded to show them where the different wards were located now tor for an hour or two visiting with old friends dinner at 1130 and what a spread arranged by the ward committees all the old folks banquet ted first everybody working tor for their welfare after dinner the old folks again talked with their friends while the committees had lunch the stake old folks committee furnished about 30 gallons of ice cream 3 or 4 sticks of bananas halt a dozen buckets of choice candy oranges cider etc at prof forrest gave the bugle call which meant that all should gather at the pavillion papillion pa forthe program A brief program was rendered opening with all arising and singing come come ye saints led by joseph H watkins and lilly knudson at the piano prayer was offered by patriarch james olsen andrew jensen of the central old folks committee shoki spoke to the veterans after which ills his companion geo margetts the comedian entertained with songs and lively stories while mrs Alar margetts getts accompanied on the piano cornet solo by the pioneer musician john forrest john baird gave two very spicy recitations the second part of the program was the distribution of cabout about 16 40 bitzes prizes to those bier over seventy the hand handcart eart pioneers received prizes the earliest inhabitant ot of box elder county proved to be charles forsgren who was born in salt lake city in 1850 while his father was on his first mission to sweden charles grandfather the late efm davis moved his family and char lie to box elder they arrived on the alth day of march 1851 the oldest lady present was mrs christensen Chrls of bear river city who was 91 years old when asked low how she had retained such good health for or so many years she replied 1 I have kept the word of wisdom tor for 50 years again the guests of honor were called back to the tables and feasted with cake ice cream candy etc the manager of 0 the resort said everything ery thing tree free for forthe the old folks today including riding on the merry go round swimming etc the trip home was enjoyed by all both old and young and no one regretted that they had assisted to honor the fathers and mothers of the community ONE WHO WAS THERE |
