Along With Good Academics South Summit Elementary is proud of their "Platinum Plus" status in the States Gold Medal Good Health program. Each year, the school continues their journey toward "Great Health" for students and staff. The good health kick off this year was held on Wednesday. Oct. 11. Eighteen fifth grade school leaders created and put on a play for the students. The setting for the play was a jungle. The students wrote the play so TURN ON TO LIFE TURN OFF TO DRUGS thai students were faced with good health dangers in the jungle. Mr. Griffin the school physical education teacher played "the good health conscience" and reminded students to by-pass the soda pop river, the pitfalls of being a couch potato the dangers of not getting enough sleep and the problems caused by not eating enough foods from the five food groups. The students ended the day with a walk at Jordanelle State Park. Each grade hiked a designated trail for 45 minutes and then returned to school to cat a healthy lunch. * . met* . I'm Drug Theodore Roosevelt said," To educate a person in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society." At South Summit Elementary School, students are given the opportunity to learn about having good character in addition to good academics. This week, South Summit Elementary School is celebrating National Character Counts Week, which is officially Oct. 15 through Oct. 21. A celebration recognized by U.S. Presidents from both parties as well as. the U.S. Senate. According to the Josephson Institute of Ethics, over 3,000,000 students nationwide will take part in this celebration. In a Proclamation by the President of the United Slates of America issued Oct. 13, 2006, it states. "America's strength is found in the spirit and character of our people. "During National Character Counts Week, we renew our commitment to instilling values in our young people and to encouraging all Americans to remember the importance of good character." President Bush goes on further lo state, "our changing world requires virtues that sustain our democracy, make self-government possible and help build a more hopeful future. National Character Counts Week is an opportunity to recognize the depth of Americals character and appreciate those who pass on our values to future generations." An assembly was held last week to kick things off and each grade level was assigned one of the Six Pillars of Character, to focus on over the course of the week. The Pillars are: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. Each trait is paired with an animal as well as a color. Grade levels were asked to decorate an area in the building with their trait and color. Teachers and students have done a fantastic job of putting these elements together to remind one another of the traits of good character. In a day when so many demands are placed on classroom teachers, these wonderful and talented individuals consistently find ways to bring character education in to all areas of the curriculum. One example is using math and measurement while asking the question, "How do I measure up when it comes to fairness?" Another way they work character education into their already hectic schedules is to incorporate writing prompts tied to the Six Pillars of Character. Tuesday, administrators Mrs. Willoughby and Ms. McQuiston, visited each grade level and awarded ribbons to students nominated by their teachers for demonstrating exemplary character. Friday is Pillar day and students arc invited lo wear the color that coordinates with the trait they have been focusing on during the week. The staff at South Summit Elementary School appreciates the support of their site council in this endeavor as they have committed funds to purchase materials for teachers and faculty members to use. They also appreciate the support of family and community members who make character education a team effort. Midway Village 1 Sold Out. Midway Village 2 Now Available.
