Dr. Cary, Melissa, and Payton Judy, Dr. G.J. and Emily Willden, Steven and Kaycee Fowles, Felicia Willden and Breanna Fredrickson recently participated in a humanitarian trip to the Dominican Republic. The effort was organized by the Lift a Life and International Aid Serving Kids (IASK) foundations. The group served in Bayaguana, a town of 30,000 — 40,000, located in the central-eastern part of the Dominican Republic about 60 miles northwest of Santo Domingo from Monday, June 9th to Thursday, June 12th. The citizens of Bayaguana were wonderful, but live in deplorable conditions. The water is unsanitary, mosquito-borne and other infectious disease are widespread, and malnutrition is all too common. Compounding these problems, many people lack access to the medical care they would certainly benefit from. The Lift a Life humanitarian team consisted of 31 individuals who made up a medical team and dental team. People began lining up early each morning before the teams even arrived at the clinic. The clinic opened between 8:00 and 9:00 each morning and remained continuously busy until closing the doors at between 5:00 to 6:00 in the evening. The medical and dental teams served approximately 300-600 patients each day. The team was joined in the final days by local health care providers and a local Courtesy Photo Several local residents participated in the Lift a Life humanitarian trip to the Dominican Republic. dentist who helped increase the team's capacity to see the multitude of people who presented to the clinic. Due to generous donations (many of which came from the Gunnison Valley and friends and family of those who partici- pated), the team was able to transport approximately 2,500 lbs (1.25 tons) of medication and medical supplies, most of which was dispensed at the clinic. The excess medicine will remain in the Dominican Republic and will continue to provide benefit to the citizens of Bayaguana. The effort was a remarkable success. The mayor of Bayaguana visited with the team at the conclusion of their visit and thanked them for serving the people there. The team would like to express gratitude to the many individuals and companies who gave donations and supported the effort. Thanks for helping to make a difference to those who so desperately needed it. Gunnison Valley's Independence Day celebration begins this Sunday with a patriotic fireside, held at the Gunnison Stake Center Sunday, June 29 at 7:00 p.m. Representative from District 70 in the Utah House of Representatives, Kay McIff, will speak. "I anticipate talking about the remarkable role America has played in the history of the world," he said, "It has been the best expression of freedom, more than any other country." Mclff, according to his biographical sketch, "is the only Utah legislator with extensive experience in all three branches of government." He served as presiding judge in Utah's Sixth District Court, his executive experience includes serving as Chair on SUU's Board of Trustees, and he's currently serving his 8th year in the state legislature. Mclff served in the National Guard, and was on active duty at Fort Ord and Fort Sill. He is a graduate of USU and of U of U, and was instrumental in establishing Snow College Richfield. He lives in Representative Kay Mclff Richfield with his wife, Renee. Practicing law as a prosecutor, and observing the law while sitting on the bench, Mclff saw the importance of the law. "I've seen those who've lost their freedoms," he said. In his talk, McIff will also address the role of every citizen, "the importance of informed, patriotic citizenry who are committed to the principals of equal justice, rule of law, and maintaining a free society." The Gunnison Stake Presidency invited, "Please plan on attending with your family and gaining a greater respect for this land we call home." |
