Show Page 6 Thursday, November 3, 2011 The Gunnison Valley Gazette FFA attends National Convention Bulldog's run at state ends early The Gunnison Valley FFA attended the FFA National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana this past week. The group left Gunnison at 4:45 Tuesday morning. After their flight from Salt Lake City to Minneapolis and then into Indianapolis they arrived in time to eat and call it a night. Early Wednesday morning Mr. Burrell had them heading to Louisville, Kentucky. Their destination was the Churchill Downs where they went on a tour of the grounds. They got there in time to watch the morning workout of several horses as well as get the feel of the great racetrack and the museum through a walking tour. From there the group went to downtown Louisville, and toured the Louisville Slugger Museum. The tour was through the museum as well as the working plant where the Louisville Slugger bats are made. At the time they took the tour, the bats for the World Series were being turned. When they got back to Indianapolis, it was cold and rainy so the group divided between the movies and the gocart tracks. Both groups had fun. The next morning they were all up early and at the convention. The first keynote speaker was Dave Roever. He is a Vietnam veteran. He was severely burned when a hand grenade he was throwing was hit by a Viet Cong bullet and blew up next to his head. He talked about his survival as well as how it changed his life and made him a better person. The rest of the day was spent at the Career Show. That evening the students went to the Three Hills World's Toughest Bulls and Broncs Rodeo. It was great. However, it was only the start because at the by CONNOR HENLINE ourtesy oto GVHS students who attended the National FFA convention. end of the rodeo they hurried to the Lucas Oil Stadium and saw Steel Magnolia, Little Big Town and Blake Shelton in concert. There was almost continuous music from 9:30 to 12:30. It was a late night but they said it was so worth it. Friday morning the group was back at the convention listening to Vernice "Fly Girl" Armour. She became America's first African-American female combat pilot. She gave a very good talk about her career and goals as well as what she called Zero to Breakthrough Success Plan. The group left feeling they could accomplish anything. They returned to the Career Show and attended leadership workshops. By noon, they were on their way to Joy's House. Not knowing what they were going to, they were setting off across town for their service project as part of the "FFA National Day of Service." When they arrived at an adult day center, they set about cleaning the yard and garden. They did this for half of the time and then the other half of the time they spent with the guest and enjoyed a visit during their snack time and then played games and helped to clean the rooms inside of the house. They left after four hours feeling very fulfilled and very grateful for such wonderful people who were willing to spend time with them. The keynote address for this session was a message by David Garibaldi. His message was to live your life as a platform, and live with passion and purpose. He painted a portrait of Jason Aldean on large canvasses to his music as he presented his message. The next morning the group was on their way back to Salt Lake City and home again. The week was funfilled and educational. They would like to thank Mr. Burrell and Lisa as well as Principal Larsen and Superintendant Hill and the school board for supporting their travel. Last Friday, October 28th, the Gunnison Valley High School volleyball team traveled to Utah Valley University for the Utah High School Athletic Association State Volleyball Championships. The Gunnison team went into the double elimination tournament a fourth seed, playing a number one seed, Waterford High School. The girls fell short in that matchup, 25-16, 25-13 and 25-19. In their second match of the day they went up against the Cowboys of Kanab, a third seed team. They ended up on the losing end of this one also with a score of 25-13, 25-13 and 25-9. "This team is better than this," said Coach Melissa Hall. "They worked hard all season to earn their spot at state. They pushed themselves in practice all week to prepare for some tough games. I went in on Friday expecting to walk away with an upset. I guess the pressure got to them. They showed too many nerves on the court. They worked hard to improve skills all season, but they couldn't get past the mental part of the game. Volleyball is 90% mental. It's a tough sport. I'm proud of every one of the girls for their improvement throughout the season. But we will defiantly focus more on the mental game next year." The girls finished another successful season but fell a little short in the end. Jordyn Hall led the team in assists with 191 on the year. Alyssa Morgan came in second with 145. Janna Hall had 173 kills for the season followed my Madee Christensen with 63, Morgan Overly with 43 and Kaylee Broderick rounded it out with 22 kills. Janna also led the team in aces with 42. Morgan Overly was right behind her with 28 with Alyssa Morgan at 24 and Lynzee Bartholomew at 16 aces. Defensively Janna Hall had 228 digs and Chelsey Shober adding another 114. Madee Christensen had 33.5 blocks on the season. The volleyball team would like to thank Coaches Hall, Chappell and Halliday for a fun year. Congrats to the girls on a great season and thanks for the exiting games! nitipcnis 435.528.5544 • 53 S.
