WATER LINES the increased flow of a main delivery line. After a week of working to dislodge these valves and find alternate ways to re-route the water, the city found it necessary to shut off the water so that the old line could be abandoned and the new line connected. In an effort to minimize the impact on the community, David Madsen volunteered to work through the night on Thursday, Oct 27th to complete this connection so that the schools, businesses and residents could continue with their daily routine the next day, on Friday, Oct 28th. The city turned off the water and drained the system at 5 pm, Thursday evening. David Madsen Construction and Gunnison City's crew worked together to complete the three main connections in record time and by 2 a.m. the city crew opened up the East and West tanks and restored water to the lines. The installation of new valves during this upgrade will eliminate the possibility of a shutdown happening again in the near future. This two block upgrade of the city's culinary water infrastructure is the beginning of an ambitious effort to replace all cast iron water lines and transite pipe located within the city over the next 5 years. The city plans to use impact fees, enterprise fund savings, and grants to fund these upgrades. The city will complete a section of town each year until the goal is met. The city believes these upgrades will eliminate rust complaints in neighborhoods, increase reliability of fire protection services, enhance and stabilize water pressure, and most importantly save taxpayer funds through better management of our water resource by minimizing waste and eliminating water leaks. iron service lines and laterals that extended to each home and business from Main Street to 200 East. The city planned to connect the new line without disruption of water service to Gunnison City residents. The city's water system is designed with valves so that sections of town can be isolated when lines need repair. However the crews discovered that the valves needed to isolate this section of town were time-locked, inoperable, and compromised by the pounds of pressure caused by Remember to vote on Tuesday November 8th! Pleasant on Saturday, Nov. 5; in Gunnison on Saturday, Nov. 12; and in Ephraim on Saturday, Nov. 19. The events will raise money for Sub for Santa by selling donated items. But not everything at the sale will be "old" or used. "Many of the items are brand new," said yard-sale coordinator Marlene Westlund. Sale items include: • Clothing • Linens and blankets • Dishes and other housewares • Crafts, fabrics, and craft-making • Scrapbooking items • Holiday decorations • Home decor • Books • Collectors items • Other "general yard-sale fare" For each of the last couple years, Sub for Santa has made good holidays out of what otherwise would have been disappointing Christmases for about 900 children. This year, with the local economy not much better and, for some, even worse, Wilson expects the need for Sub for Santa will be even greater. The more funds we raise at our yard sales in the next couple weeks will mean the less we'll have to hold our hands out for donations come crunch time in December," Wilson said. But, of course, if people cannot make it to a yard sale but would like to get in an early donation for Sub for Santa, they can do so by mailing their donation to Sub for Santa, P.O. Box 302, Mt.
