Show The Gunnison Valley Gazette Page 6 Thursday, July 21, 2011 Three chosen from Central Utah Three of the 17 Elite Team players on the Central Utah Volleyball Club were chosen to represent the Intermountain Volleyball Association (IVA) Region at the High Performance (HP) National Tournament to be held in Tucson, AZ on July 24-28. Kennedy Springer from Delta, Ashley Whitaker from Fillmore, and Janna Hall from Gunnison attended a preliminary tryout for the High Performance teams on March 8, 2011. Five separate tryouts were held throughout the IVA Region which includes all of Utah, Southern Idaho, and Western Wyoming. From these five tryouts, the three were invited back for HP Selection Camp on June 13-15 where the final two teams were chosen. The three young women played together on CUVC 17 Elite team this club season which, on May 14th competed in, and won, the 17/18 Elite Championships. Each spring, 40 regions across the United States host a tryout to determine who will represent their region in a HP National Tournament. CUVC players have attended these tryouts in past years, and some, including Kennedy Springer, were chosen as alternates. However, these three girls have made their respective teams and on July 20-23 will attend HP Team Camp in Salt Lake City to train, then will travel to Tucson to compete on July 24-28. This years HP Tournament is scheduled to include representative teams from other countries making it an international tournament event. Club Volleyball has existed for over 35 years nationally and in Utah since 1990. Performance is considered the "pipeline" through which USA Volleyball gathers and trains future Olympic hopefuls. Two USA Women's team members, Emillie Toone, from American Fork, and Logan Tom from Salt Lake City benefited from this "pipeline" and competed in various HP National Championships as youth. These girls have put in hard work and sacrifice. Playing at these levels requires time, travel, and a financial commitment above and beyond the typical high school athlete. The CUVC would encourage community members to support any fundraising these girls will most likely hold this month. You can contact them to find out details and give them a pat on the back for demonstrating that rural Central Utah athletes have what it takes to compete with the best.
