Show Society Thursday, July 21, 2011 Page 3 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Obituary Missionary First Birthday VerDell Johnson 1929 - 2011 Elder Jacob Embley Kashus Mitton AXTELL—Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, VerDell Nielsen Johnson, age 81, died July 18, 2011 at her home in Axtell. She was born September 30, 1929 in Axtell, a daughter of Hans William and Pearl Elmina Spainhower Nielsen. She graduated from Gunnison Valley High School. VerDell married Weldon D. Johnson, February 17, 1948 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was a member of the LDS Church and she enjoyed her monthly luncheons with the Relief Society Sisters. Our mother was deeply loved by many and lived a full and honorable life, giving so much of herself to others, unselfishly. She has left behind as her legacy, life lessons in cornpassion, strong work ethics and values, that her children and grandchildren will carry with them, throughout their lives. We thank you for that, Mom. She will be deeply missed and remembered for her loving nature towards everyone who knew her. VerDell is survived by her beloved husband, Weldon, of Axtell; her children: Diane Chevier of Salt Lake City; Nadine Ehardt of Keystone, South Dakota; Claudia Nielson of Axtell; Sherrie LaFurge of Ridgefield, Washington; Tonya Busker of Lehi; Jana Shields of St. George; Layne Johnson of Hurricane; 21 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Beryl Ball of Salina. She was preceded in death by a son and a daughter, Gary Johnson and Lynette McIntosh; also four brothers and four sisters. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 22, 2011 at 12 Noon in the Axtell LDS Ward Chapel, where friends may call for viewing Friday morning from 10 to 11:30 prior to the services. Burial will be in the Centerfield City Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah. He has been called to the Texas San Antonio Mission—Spanish speaking. He will enter the MTC on July 27, 2011. Elder Embley is the son of Dr. Steven and Heidi Embley of Gunnison. He is the grandson of Michael and Phyllis Embley and J. Dale and Linda Christensen. Elder Embley graduated from Maple Mountain High School in 2010. He was the valedictorian, math sterling scholar and a captain of the football team. He received the Thomas S. Monson Presidential Scholarship at BYU and plans to continue his education at BYU upon completion of his missionary service. Mike is the son of Neal Mecham and the grandson of Bernita Mecham of Axtell. Dance Works Studio of Gunnison Valley returned Friday July 15th from a trip to California where the dancers performed in California Adventure on Tuesday and Circus Circus in Las Vegas on Thursday. They also visited Disneyland, Knotsberry Farm and Huntington Beach. Jeana James met them in Las Vegas to view the performance. The dance group was under the direction of Mekesha Wanner this past year and they all did a great job. Dancing with the group from Axtell were JoDee Hartley, Charlene, Jennie and Damian Otten, Danielle and Chad Boore, Penny Hartley and Audrey Boore also went on the trip with the kids. Saturday, July 23 the Axtell Pioneer Day celebration will be held at Anthony's Flat up Willow Creek Canyon with a dinner at 6 p.m. and games before the dinner.
