We have the talent. Get ready to see some more wins. Great team, great players, and they’re coming together more and more.” Gunnison Sophomore Breanna Young is earning the praise of coaches and teammates with her play. She liked what she saw in the Manti game. “We were working as a team,” Young said. “We had it in our minds that we were going to win, and we played that way.” Young seems to improve with each game at the right wing position. “My responsibilities are to run back and help the defense, and send passes to the middle so the forwards can score,” Young said. Breanna is also a member of the vocal group Cantus, and she, along with teammate Clara Scharf, joined Cantus in singing the National Anthem before the Manti game. Young also plays flute in the school band, and she’s landed a part in the school musical “Beauty and the Beast”. She says everyone on the team is enjoying the season. “Everybody is excited and having fun,” she said. “We need to keep a positive attitude, and work on our passing skills so we don’t feel pressured when we get the ball,” Young added. This homecoming week, the Bulldogs host region matches against Millard on Tuesday, September 30th, and Grand on Thursday, October 2nd. Both matches start at 4 pm at Bulldog field. With just two weeks left in the regular season, the Bulldogs are tied with North Sevier for sixth place in Region 12. Millard leads at 10-0-0 for 30 points. (Teams get 3 points for a win, 1 for a tie). Beaver is second at 9-1-0 and 27 points, followed by South Sevier at 54-1 and 16 points; Grand and Manti are each 5-5-0 with 15 points; Gunnison and North Sevier are 2-8-0 with 6 points; and Richfield is 1-8-1 with 4 points. The top seven teams make the playoffs. GVHS ecoming m o H car This week’s Heap of the Week goes to GVHS. In set one, the teams traded points early, with the Bulldogs getting a kill from junior Cami Carlisle, a block from senior Cheyenne Thatcher, and an ace from senior Sara Jo Childs for points. Freshman Sara Brown’s big block gave the Bulldogs a 6-5 lead, and later in the set the Bulldogs got kills from junior Felicia Jensen and senior Bailie Reynolds, as well as points from Childs and Thatcher, but the Templars held on for the 25-18 first set win. Childs served three points in a row early in the second set, with kills from Thatcher and Reynolds. Thatcher would add another kill and an ace as the Bulldogs built a 12-8 set two lead. But Manti went on a 7-0 run to take a three point lead at 15-12. Then, with Manti up 21-18, the Templars closed the set with four straight points to win it 25-18 and take a 2-0 match lead. Thatcher, Carlisle, and Reynolds each had kills in the third set, but two extended Manti scoring runs lead to a 25-13 set win, and a 3-0 match victory for the Templars. The game moves too fast for me to keep a lot of stats other than kills and aces, but I know that Gunnison senior libero Samantha Coates, junior middle blocker Rayel Sorenson and freshman hitter Kayli Frandsen each contributed valuable digs and passes for the Bulldogs against the Templars. I spoke briefly with Bulldog senior Sara Jo Childs Monday night after she’d had a busy day of school, volleyball practice, a volleyball team dinner, painting the windows at Lotsa Motsa for homecoming, and powderpuff football practice. If she ever finds time, she says she likes boating and wakeboarding with friends. This is Sara’s third year on the volleyball team. She spends most of her time at the net as a middle blocker, going up against the opposing team’s best hitters. She also helps out with digs, passes, and hits. She says the team hoped for a better result against Manti. “I think we could have played a lot harder,” she said, adding that there have been some good practices since that match. Childs likes the constant action of a volleyball game. “I just like to play. It’s a fun sport,” Childs said. The team is still talking about the trip to Salt Lake a couple of weeks ago to see a match at the University of Utah. The highlight of the trip may have been participating in a Westminster College practice session. “It was an awesome experience,” Childs said. Childs and the rest of the volleyball players get together for a team dinner the night before home games. Monday night’s event was at Lotsa Motsa. “Sometimes it’s at the school or sometimes we go to one of the girls houses,” Childs said. “Today we went to Lotsa Motsa and painted their window for homecoming.” Childs says the Bulldog coaching staff is awesome, and she likes the play of the team’s freshmen. “It’s their first year and they’ve been amazing,” Childs said. “Hopefully we’ll do great and win some matches.” This week, it’s more Region 12 action as the Bulldogs host 2A’s top-ranked Richfield Wildcats in a homecoming match on Tuesday at 7 pm, then play the second-ranked South Sevier Rams in Monroe on Thursday night. Next week, they’ll host the third-ranked San Juan Broncos on Tuesday, October 7th, and the Grand County Red Devils on Saturday, October 11th. The San Juan and Grand varsity matches are scheduled for 6 pm. Friends and Family Far From Home? Keep them in touch with hometown happenings! In the last minute of the first half, Nilsson took control of the ball and dribbled into the Manti penalty box area, forcing a Manti defender to pull her down and creating a penalty kick for Gunnison. Meseret took the shot and made no mistake, striking it into the left corner for her second of the day and fourth of the year, and the Bulldogs led 3-0 at halftime. A Gunnison hand-ball in the penalty area gave Manti a penalty kick in the 7th minute of the second half, and the Templars converted it to cut the Bulldog lead to 3-1. But that’s as close as they’d get. Bulldog defenders Mari Gomez, Kayla Peterson, and Karen Orozco cleared away most of Manti’s chances, and Jensen stopped whatever did make it through. Gabi Gomez, Brenda Gomez, and Clara Scharf each had another fine game in the midfield for the Bulldogs, whether they were coming back to help the defense or creating offensive flow with forward passes. Coach Jensen sees things that need work, but likes his team’s effort. “I think we had five or six bad throw-ins, and we had one good set play from a free kick, but a couple just weren’t there,” Jensen said. It was another week of firsts for the second-year Gunnison Lady Bulldog soccer program. They beat region and county rivals Manti 3-1 last Tuesday, September 23rdtheir first win ever against the Templars. It was also the Lady Bulldogs first-ever win on their home field. Two days later, the Bulldogs endured a frustrating 1-0 region loss to South Sevier on the road in Monroe. Both goals scored against Gunnison last week were on penalty kicks. Manti came to Gunnison ranked #5 overall in 2A, but the Bulldogs played the Templars tough earlier this season and went into this match with confidence. Meseret Deskins scored two goals for Gunnison and Sarah Nilsson scored once, while Bulldog goalkeeper Megan Jensen made some crucial saves during a furious second-half Manti comeback attempt. “They wanted it, especially that first half,” Gunnison head coach Jaron Jensen said of his team after the match. “That second half, Manti went all out to get the ball and our girls withstood the fury for forty minutes. We had some smart play- and a couple of not so smart plays- but we’ll iron that out at practice,” Jensen said. The Bulldogs took the lead in the 19th minute of the first half. Midfielder Brissa Orozco fired a hard shot from about 20 yards out, but it deflected off a couple of Manti defenders. Nilsson was closing on goal and got to the ball ahead of Manti’s defense, booting it in from a couple of yards out for her team-leading 6th goal of the year, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Just five minutes later, Fekirte Deskins made a forward run and sent a pass to Meseret Deskins.
