Show Page 8 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Thursday, October 4, 2007 Jensen pleased with team defense Do Your Best by MITCH PETERSON In Gunnison girls soccer action last week, the Bulldogs endured the long trip to Moab and played well in a loss to the Grand County Red Devils on Tuesday, September 25, then got their best offensive output of the year a couple days later in a home loss to North Sevier. Against North Sevier last Thursday, Fekirte Deskins scored two goals and Karen Orozco added another but the Wolves came out ahead 8-3. North Sevier jumped ahead 10 in the sixth minute, but the Bulldogs tied it up just a couple minutes later. Deskins controlled the ball in the middle of the field near the top of the 18yard box and sent a pass ahead to Heather Matthews, who then sent a pass back to Deskins. Her shot hit the post, but the ball bounced back to her and this time she put it in the net for her second goal of the year. Deskins blasted four shots in a 17 minute span after the goal, and her shot in the 28th minute beat the Wolves keeper but caught the left post. In the 30th minute, Deskins sent a cross from the right side of the field to the front of the net. There, Orozco won position and booted in a one-timer for her fifth goal of the season, cutting the Wolves lead to 3-2. Deskins sent a hard shot on goal in the 35th minute and again beat the Wolves keeper but found the right post. The Mitch Peterson/Gunnison Valley Gazette Gunnison’s Breanna Young (16) weaves her way through North Sevier’s defense during last week’s Region 12 soccer match in Gunnison. Wolves led 6-2 at halftime. Gunnison goalkeeper Megan Jensen made four saves in the first few minutes of the second half, but the Wolves extended their lead to 7-2 in the 14th minute. In the 28th minute of the second half, Deskins picked up a free ball near midfield, headed it forward and had a clear breakaway. She pulled up about 12 yards out and sent a hard shot past the Wolves onrushing keeper into the back of the net for her second goal of the game and third of the year. “She’s created just about every goal we’ve scored this year with her feet, and today she got the break out that she needed,” said Bulldogs head coach Jaron Jensen. The Wolves held on to win the match 8-3, but Jensen saw a lot of positives for the Bulldogs. “I saw some offensive threats that we haven’t seen before,” Jensen said. “Our midfielders were involved in our offense and they came back and marked.” Heather Matthews played well early, but wasn’t feeling well and had to sit out much of the match. “I think we would have produced more goals with her in there. We had some great shots on goal while she was playing,” Jensen said. Jensen was also pleased with the team defense. “The defense came through for us, and we had an outstanding performance by Lillian Araujo,” Jensen said. “She took control with her head in the midfield. It’s the first time I’ve seen anyone go head to head with a girl in the air. That puts chills in my spine because I think these girls are ready to step it up to the next level next year.” Araujo is just a sophomore. Bulldog middle defender Johanna Aguilar also played well, and had to contend with Wolves high-scoring forward Lauren Jensen all afternoon. “She was pretty tough,” Aguilar said. “I just ran as fast as I could, and tried to take the ball from her.” As a junior, Aguilar is already a team leader. “On defense, I feel I can help other players,” she said. “If the wing defenders don’t get the ball, then I have to step in and take it away from the other team’s player.” Away from the soccer pitch, Aguilar says she likes to have fun hanging out with her friends. One thing is for sure, this young Bulldog team gets better and better each week. “We’re playoff bound next year, and I’d put money on that,” Jensen said. This week, the Bulldogs wrap up the regular season. They’ll travel to Richfield for a match with the Wildcats on Tuesday, October 2nd, then host Beaver in the season finale Thursday, October 4th, at 4 pm.
