Wind was apparently a factor during Monday’s first round as just two players, both from Rowland Hall, shot under 80. Rowland Hall leads after Monday’s first round with a score of 319, while Beaver is a distant second at 344. Each team counts their four best scores out of six total players. Richfield is third at 353, just two strokes ahead of the Bulldogs and Millard Eagles, who each fired 355. Layton Christian, Grand, and Manti also made the first day cut, with Layton Chrisian finish- Record W:10 L:5 Game #1 Florida @ LSU Frandsen: Florida 31- LSU- 28 Leatherwood: Florida 28- LSU- 24 In the first three minutes of the game the Wasps had put up 14 quick points and once again it was dejavu. It was as if I had seen this scenario before with the Bulldogs giving up quick points in the first quarter. With the Bulldogs down 14 to 0 early in the first quarter it seemed as if the Big Dogs decided it was time to play some ball. Gaining the ball on the Gunnison 48 yard line the Bulldogs went to work with a combination of one-two punches both running and throwing the ball. Gunnison was able to drive the ball 52 yards with the legs of Jace Anderson and Heston Neal and the hands of Anderson and the arm of Bradley Jackson. On a tough 4th and goal Anderson slanted across the endzone and Jackson hit him right on the mark to put the first Bulldog points on the board. Gunnison then converted on a two point conversion with a power drive to the right. With three minutes left in the first, the score stood at 8-14 for the Wasps. After being bit by the Dogs the Wasps were looking to sting again. It looked as if they were going to do just that again but with great open field tackles by Jaden Fredrickson and Shawn Gubeli and pressure coming from the Senior’s David Crane, Spencer Hansen, Kade Bown and Ethan Niel, the Wasps felt the strong arm of the Bulldogs and had to punt the ball away ending the first quarter. The momentum now swinging in the direction of the Bulldogs and deep in their own territory on the 15 yard line, Jackson found his isolated target Neal in the flats, who took the pass and with speed and elusive feet the Junior weaved his way down the field to the Wasp 30 yard line for a 54 yard reception. Just as quick as the momentum came it disappeared with a series of miscues, penalties, and dropped passes the Bulldogs had to turn the ball over on downs. With the momentum nowhere to be found the Bulldogs attempted to get it back by stopping the Wasps with tackles behind the line of Florida lost at home but Urban doesn’t lose two in a row. Urban is 10-1 after a loss. Game #2 Oklahoma @ Texas Leatherwood: Oklahoma- 34 - Texas 21 Frandsen: Oklahoma-17 Texas - 10 Courtesy Photo Front row: Kade Caldwell and Drayson Ball. The tournament wraps up Tuesday, October 2nd, but finishes well after our Tuesday deadline. We hope to have a full report next week. Bulldogs stung by Wasps by SHAWN CRANE Picks of the Week Record W:9 L:6 scrimmage coming from the left with Crane, Bown and Harris and coming from the right with Hansen, Niel and Frandsen forcing the Wasps to punt once again, putting the Bulldogs on their own 18. The Big Dogs began to attack and get control of the corners with great runs by Sophomore Cutler Frandsen and some great passing by Jackson. The Bulldogs pushed but came up short and had to punt the ball away. The Bulldogs having held the Wasps scoreless for the last 20 minutes allowed Juab to attack the corners and the secondary and score in the last minute of the first half. The Wasps were unable to score on the two point conversion and the score settled in to 8-20 for the Wasps. It looked as if the Bulldogs were going to make something happen with back to back 11 and 12 yard runs by Neal off the hindquarters of the middle of the line and then to the air with passes to Bryant Davis for 11 and a screen to Anderson for another 10. The Bulldogs were on the march and found themselves deep in Juab territory on the Wasps 26 yard line with 15 seconds remaining. Jackson improvising by throwing off his back foot after being stepped on by his own player hit his mark with Gubeli bringing the ball in on the 17 yard line with 6.3 seconds left and the end-zone in sight. With time for only one more play the Jackson pass was batted up into the air and intercepted stopping another great drive by the Bulldogs. After the initial three minutes of play in the first quarter the Bulldogs proved that they were neck and neck with the Wasps and could hold their own. In the second half the Wasps scored on their first possession after driving the length of the field with a straight ahead attack and finally pulling off the reverse for a 20 yard dash into the end-zone. The Bulldogs once again found themselves deep in the hole with the score 8-27 for the Wasps. The Bulldogs answered back with a 40 yard drive that pushed into Juab territory all the way down to the Wasp 25 yard Members of the 2007 Gunnison Valley High School Football Team. line but came up short and had to turn the ball over once again as the first down pass went off the tip of the fingers of Gubeli. The Wasps were able to work the ball against the Bulldogs once again and scored on a screen play to the left bringing the score to 8-34 for the Wasps. It looked as if the Wasps might score one more time but the Bulldogs fought back and stopped the Wasps on the 15 yard line with Gubeli intercepting the pass from the Wasps and stopping their drive. The Bulldogs struggled to score again until late in the 4th quarter after starting on the Gunnison 15 yard line and moving he ball 75 yards to score on a one yard run by Matthew Harris. On that series Neal was able to put together 44 of the 75 yards for the Bulldogs and Jackson was able to throw for another 15 yards with Anderson putting the finishing touches on the drive. That proved to be the final score in the game with the Wasps defeating the Bulldogs 34 – 14. One thing that I was very impressed with was the no die spirit that the Bulldogs had throughout the game. Time after time I would see them rise to their feet, some playing injured and limping others running to and from the sideline and the huddle and others hitting as hard at the end as they were at the first. I was very impressed with Matthew Harris stepping up in the holes and taking on the bigger running backs standing them up and unleashing everything he had on them all the way to the end. I was impressed with Fredrickson coming up from the corner spot and saving many touchdowns with open field tackles. I was impressed with the likes of Anderson and Neal who never gave up and fought to the end always driving their feet. I was impressed with the offensive line of Travis Roberts, Wes Young, Bown, Crane, Hansen and Jake Sorensen who continued to make holes for the running backs even to the end. All in all I am very proud of the spirit that was shown by all who were there that night. I believe See BULLDOGS, Page 9 Game #3 Utah @ Louisville Frandsen: Utah - 10 Louisville- 31 We will see which team shows up. Leatherwood: Utah - 21 - Louisville- 17 It could happen twice in one season, depending on which Utah team shows up. Frandsen: BYU has a bye this week but they are on top of the Mountain West and Utah is dead bottom. Who’d thunk it!!! Editor’s Note: In last week’s Talkin’ Smack, I reported that Leatherwood picked Utah State 34, Utah 17. I had it wrong. The correct pick was Utah-34, Utah State 17. SORRY! Little mistakes cost Lady Bulldogs by MITCH PETERSON The Gunnison Bulldogs volleyball team finally got to play a home match Tuesday, September 25th after a week on the road, but had to jump right back on the bus a couple days later and head to a match against South Sevier in Monroe. In that Tuesday home match against Manti, the Templars won the first game 25-16 and grabbed a quick 4-0 lead in game two, but Nicole Childs and Kacey Jensen provided a spark and Gunnison bounced back. Later in the game, Manti looked to be pulling away when they went up 20-14, but the Bulldogs scored five in a row, including two aces by Stacy Mellor, to narrow Manti’s lead to 20-19. The Templars outscored the Bulldogs 5-1 down the stretch to take game two 25-20. With Manti up 3-1 in game 3, Jerrica Pickett got the Bulldogs on the board with a big kill, then Bailie Reynolds served up three straight aces as Gunnison took a 4-3 lead. A Cheyenne Thatcher kill gave the Bulldogs six points in a row, and after Manti scored on a Bulldogs unforced error, senior Brianne Winters kept a play alive to force a Manti error and the Bulldogs had a 7-4 lead. The Templars scored three in a row to tie it up at 7-7, then it was again time for Pickett, who slammed a kill and served two straight aces as the Bull- Kami Carlisle returns the ball. dogs built a 10-7 lead. The teams traded points for awhile, but the Templars managed to build a small lead and hold on for a 25-20 game three win and a match victory. “We had some things going in the last two games,” said head coach Jody Allred. “We had a few too many little mistakes here and there. You’ve got to stay positive in volleyball. You have to keep communicating and play through it.” Bulldogs junior setter Bailie Reynolds agrees. “When we talk a lot, we pass better,” Reynolds said. “Once we get good passing, then we can get good sets.” And good sets lead to kills. Reynolds says the team needs to keep work- Courtesy Photo/Christine Jensen ing on serving. “We missed a lot of serves tonight, and we struggled a little with our hitting. But Cheyenne Thatcher and Jerrica Pickett have been playing really well,” Reynolds said. South Sevier is a tough place to play any sport, and the Rams, who recently knocked off the highly ranked San Juan Broncos in Monroe, beat the Bulldogs in three straight last Thursday. The Bulldogs continue their Region 12 schedule this week hosting Richfield Tuesday night at 7 pm, and Grand County on Saturday, October 6th. The Grand match is scheduled for 3 pm.
