PLEASANT—How do you measure progress in a high school jazz band? Let’s take a look at what Timothy Kidder has done at North Sanpete High School in less than two years. First, let’s look at numbers. When Kidder began teaching music last school year, the jazz band had 15 members, half saxophonists. Kidder recognized the need for change. Now the band has 21 players: five trumpets, five trombones, six saxes and five rhythm. Of these, some notable players include Devin Shelley—the band’s pianist who received an outstanding soloist award at state—and Aaron Johnson, trumpeter. Next, let’s look at quality. The students say they’ve noticed a shift in quality. “We are rapidly improving,” said Shelley. Kidder attributes this success, in part, to his love and excitement for music. “I did it by accident. Instead of telling them to practice, I said, ‘hey, let’s practice.’” The students drink in Kidder’s passion and enthusiasm to improve his skills. They were given 1’s (superior) at region, thus enabling them to continue to state. At state, they received 2 (excellent), 2+ and 2-. In addition to this success, the band was invited to attend the Snow College Jazz Summit, where they interacted with faculty members from the Juilliard School, a prestigious performing arts conservatory in New York City. Pleasant to Wesley and Joyce Johansen. He married Lori Hudson in the Manti LDS Temple on Dec. 20, 1975. They spent 16 wonderful but short years together before her passing on Oct. 5, 1991. While together, Gregg and Lori enjoyed hunting, camping and fishing. They passed their love for the outdoors on to their children, who enjoyed the fishing trips to Scofield and the camping trips up Fairview Canyon that they got to spend with their father throughout his lifetime. Gregg couldn’t seem to break the bogey golf barrier but enjoyed taking his sons to Round Valley whenever he could. Gregg graduated from Orem High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from BYU. This degree took Gregg and Lori to great places where they met many great people, including at the Utah Navajo Development Council in Blanding. In Coalville, he spent the last 18 years as the business administrator for the North Summit School District. Gregg was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had a strong testimony of the Savior and of the plan of happiness and knew that the day would finally come when he would be reunited with Lori. He lived a remarkable life and always had a smile on his face, despite enduring many health challenges from a young age. Gregg is survived by his five children: Brenda (Matt) Mickel of Spring City, Laura K Wednesday, April 29, 2009 School Obituaries Phyllis Hermansen Greener, 92, passed away quickly Sunday night, April 26, 2009, in Gunnison. Phyllis was born in Gunnison on Dec. 8, 1916, and lived virtually all her life in Gunnison, close to the parents she loved, Nels and Mary Hermansen. She was preceded in death by her brother Ronald, who was killed in action at the end of World War II, and her sister Florence and brother Ray, both of whom were also lifelong Gunnison residents.
