BLM clarifies livestock grazing WASHINGTON—The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has issued a clarification explaining that it is relying on regulations that were in effect prior to July 12, 2006, to manage livestock grazing on land it administers. The BLM published a new set of regulations in 2005. But in July 2006, a U.S. District Court in Idaho struck down the regulations, and the Department of Justice decided not to appeal the ruling. The suit challenging the regulations was filed by an environmental group called the Western Watersheds Project. The suit charged the new regulations would permit overgrazing and cause irreparable damage to rangelands. In its complaint, which named Joe Kraayenbrink, manager of the BLM for the Idaho Falls District, among others, Western Watersheds Project charged that the proposed new regulations would “benefit the livestock industry … at the expense of the natural resources and public interest, and in violation of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).” According to a statement issued from BLM headquarters in Washington, “The pre-July 12, 2006, livestock grazing regulations, with limited exception, have been and will continue to be enforced on BLM-managed lands,” and any future changes to grazing rules will “occur through a new rulemaking effort.” Hospital gets new hearing equipment Sanpete County Republicans will meet at Ephraim Middle School (555 S. 100 East) at 7 p.m. for an organizing convention.
