Show Cyan Magenta Yellow Black A10 Sanpete Messenger-Gunnison Valley Edition Hawks soccer team gets rolling with wins over Millard, Carbon By Mitch Peterson Staff writer MT. PLEASANT—After getting off to a slow start offensively this season, the North Sanpete Hawks boys’ soccer team got rolling in a big way last week, beating the Millard Eagles in Mt. Pleasant 5-1 in their last pre-season match. Two days later, the Hawks made it two wins in a row with a 2-1 overtime Region 8 victory over the Carbon Dinos. Head Coach Kent Farley was glad to see the offense get going against the Eagles. “Getting some goals will give the players some confidence,” he said. Farley is implementing a new system this year, focusing on ball control. “Keeping the ball on the ground, more passing, just more of a control game,” he said. “As we get used to the new system, we’ll get better.” And the Hawks controlled the tempo of the Millard game from the start, thanks to the skills of playmakers Rafael Contreras and Pablo Tinoco, and the speed of John Anderson and Tyson Church. Tinoco got the Hawks’ first goal of the season in the 17th minute when he beat Millard’s goalkeeper from about 10 yards out, after an assist from Anderson. Two minutes later, Church put the Hawks up 2-0 with his first career goal, on another assist from Anderson. “I got that cross from John,” Church said, “and just connected with it, got into the back of the net.” Church would soon repay the favor. In the 35th minute, he found himself all alone left of the goal, with Millard’s goalie out of position. He dribbled to the front of the net and could have tapped the ball in, but instead got the ball to Anderson for the easy score. Church was glad to let his teammate get a feel for scoring goals. “I heard him yell that he was open and wanted him to get that one since I already had one,” he said. That gave the Hawks a 3-0 halftime lead, and the second half was more of the same as they kept up the pressure, creating a lot of scoring chances and corner-kick situations. Millard did get a goal in the 59th minute as Josh Robison scored from about 10 yards out, but the Hawks defense clamped down the rest of the game. Their fourth goal came in the 66th minute, when Aaron Bench sent a cross from the right side and found Travis White, who made no mistake as he settled the ball and booted it in. Two minutes later, Trent Anderson finished the scoring for the Hawks when he blocked a Millard clearing attempt, dribbled a couple of times, and found the net from about 20 yards out. Freshman Brigham Blackham started in goal for the Hawks and played the entire first half, while Adam Coombs took over in the second half. The Hawks traveled to Price last Friday to face Carbon in their first Region 8 match and came away with a 2-1 overtime win over the Dinos. John Anderson scored the game winner about four minutes into the overtime period. Trent Anderson gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the first half, but the Dinos tied it up in the second, forcing the overtime session. Coach Farley said Hawks goalie Brigham Blackham “did a fantastic job” holding the Dinos to just one goal. With the two wins last week, the Hawks overall record stands at 2-5-0, while their region record is 1-0-0. Due to spring break, the next Hawks game is a Region 8 match at Lehi on Wednesday, March 30. Hawk netters face stiff competition at St. George tournament, lose all three ST. GEORGE—The North Sanpete High School tennis team ran into some seasoned tennis players at the Bloomington Country Club Tennis Tournament in St. George on Friday and Saturday, March 1819. The Hawks played three matches and lost all three. The first match was against 1-A tennis powerhouse Waterford. Waterford swept the Hawks, 5-0. In first singles Chad De Mill played the number one high school tennis player in the state, Calvin Bennett. DeMill gave it his best effort but was no match for the $75,000 worth of lessons Bennett’s parents have provided for him. DeMille lost 6-0, 6-0. Jordan Blackham and Spencer Poulson didn’t fare much better but were able to win a few games in second and third singles. Jordan lost, 6-1, 6-1, and Spencer lost, 6-1, 6-1. Zach Morin and Cameron Fowler teamed up for first doubles and struggled in a 6-0, 6-0 match. Two freshmen for the Hawks stepped up for second doubles. Josh Benson and Scott Bentley fought valiantly but also came up short, 6-0, 6-2. Later that evening, the Hawks squared off against 4A’s Box Elder and lost, 3-2. In first singles, Blackham did a fine job attacking the net but just could not finish off the games. He ended up losing a closer-thanit-looked match, 6-4, 6-2. De Mill moved down to second singles and played his best match of the season. He won the first set but had to go into a tiebreaker for the second set. He squeaked out a win 6-4 7-6(8). In first doubles, Fowler and Bobby Johnson lost, 6-1, 6-1. In second doubles Morin and Shawn Miner played an enjoyable match and came out with a victory, 6-2, 7-5. On Saturday morning the Hawks faced off against fellow 3A team, Tooele. Tooele came to play and loved the Hawks. 5-0. Lady Bulldogs start season the hard way with games and losses against Manti and South Sevier By Mitch Peterson Staff writer MONROE—The young Gunnison Lady Bulldogs softball team couldn’t have asked for a tougher way to begin the Region 12 season. The Bulldogs opened on the road against the thirdranked Manti Templars, then faced the fourthranked and defending 2-A champion South Sevier Rams at home. The Bulldogs lost the opening game at Manti, then got off to a slow start against the Rams, giving up seven first-inning runs en route to a 3-14 loss. Five freshmen were in the starting lineup against South Sevier. “We’re getting better,” head coach Lori Winters said, and it showed in the later innings against the Rams. “If we could take that first inning away, we’d have been fine,” she said. Team leader and senior Alacia Satterfield usually runs the Bulldogs defense from her catching position, but she started on the pitcher’s mound against the Rams, where she posted three strikeouts and gave up just one extra base hit. But giving up hits wasn’t a problem for the team, Winters said. “We just gave up too many walks and made too many errors.” Eight Rams players reached base with walks, while the Bulldogs defense committed five errors. Those factors created several unearned runs for South Sevier, and the Bulldogs didn’t get any rallies going to help themselves offensively. Satterfield went three-for-three at the plate with two singles and a double, and teammate Breann Winters added a double of her own. Last Thursday, the Bulldogs picked up their first win of the year with a 13-10 victory over the 3A Canyon View Falcons in Cedar City, then headed to St. George for the weekend to play in the annual 2A and 3A March Warm-Up Tournament. The Bulldogs were bracketed with 3A teams Ogden and Snow Canyon, along with 2A’s Parowan in St. George. The Bulldogs didn’t pick up any wins at the tournament but gained some experience to take back to their Region 12 schedule. Satterfield and Breann Winters handled the pitching duties and led the team offensively in St. George, while Makale Fitzgerald and Nicole Childs made some nice defensive plays. The Bulldogs travel to Salina this week for a Region 12 match-up with the North Sevier Wolves before taking a week off for spring break. Earlier in the week the Richfield Wildcats downed the Hawks, 5-0, in the first match of the season. The Hawks are off to a rough start with four straight losses. Members of the team this year are senior Bobby Johnson; and juniors Jordan Blackham, Chad De Mill, Spencer Poulson, Cameron Fowler, Zach Morin and Scott Washburn. The only sophomores are Jay Hansen and Jason Anderson. Rounding out the roster are seven freshmen, Sean Miner, Josh Benson, Scott Bentley, Aaron Watts, Jarryd Seely, Spencer Shelley and Colton Clark. Wednesday, March 23, 2005 Templars (Continued from A9) pitches, but Wildcat fielders found themselves the recipients of those at-bats. “In 24 at-bats, we put the ball in play 23 times,” Trythall wrote, “yet only one went for a base hit. We’ve got to do a better job of ‘hittin’ it where they ain’t’ instead of hitting it right at people.” Trythall said he was accountable for the last Richfield run, and the final score should have been 2-1. “I called the wrong play with runners on first and third with two outs, and it cost us a run,” Trythall wrote. Manti traveled to Monroe Tuesday to take on the South Sevier Rams (results not available by press time). The Templars will then face what could be their most difficult test to date when they host Gunnison on Thursday. The Bulldogs had championship ambitions last year but were cut short of their goals and took fourth in the state tournament. This year, Gunnison has a 7-0 record, has shut out three of the seven teams they have played, and has an average margin of victory of more than six points. Mom and Dad Lady Badgers prove they can play with league’s best in four losses EPHRAIM—Those who just look at the scores of this weekend’s four losses the Snow College Badgers softball team suffered against Salt Lake Community College won’t get the full story. Yes, Snow College lost all four games: 5-16, 1-7, 2-3 and 1-9, but the Badgers proved they could play with the best in the league. The Bruins came into the games undefeated and in first place in the SWAC. In game one, the Badgers struck first when McKell Shurtliff made a two-run home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the first inning. They gave up four in the top of the third, but came back with another in the bottom of the inning and trailed by just one run going into the top of the sixth.
