The Barbee & Walker shipped $4,000 in bullion the day before the fire, and had about $1,000 worth of amalgam melted by the fire. The total product of the mill during the twenwas nearly $20,000. The ball given by the Masonic Association at Welte’s Garden last evening was attended by quite a number of disciples of Terpsichore. The music was furnished by the Santa Clara brass band, and was very good. . Mr. R. C. West, the popular caterer, provided the party with a supper which it would be difficult to surpass. We are glad to see the carpenters and mechanics of Silver Reef employed in rebuilding the burnt district. This is as it should be. It is always best to employ home talent. The mechanics who live among us spend their money right where they earn it, while mechanics from abroad, though they may worka little cheaper, will take-the proceeds of their labor to build up some other town. The mineral wax which isiobtained in Sanpete county has elicited considerable discus- sion ini scientific quarters as to its true character. Piof. Newberry in the Engineering and Mining Journal winds up his remarks in relation to the subject as follows: ‘'Further examination will certainly throw light upon the actual character of this substance and demonstrate fully the presence of or absence of the parafiine group.’ After that we shall of course know allaboutit. The boiler, which was encased by heavy walls of brick, appears to be perfectly sound and ready for use. ' The pipe conveying water to the pump was left open and the engine room by this means was kept partly flooded. The pipes conveying steam to the cylinder, pans and pump were early-broken_by falling timbers, allowing the ateam from the boiler to escape and thus prevented what otherwis¢ would have been 4 terrible explosion. The escape of the steam, which lasted perhaps a quarter of an hour, must have greatly aided in the suppression of the fire in the vicinity of the engine. The engine of the hoisting works is uninjured; the timbers are mostly still in place but too greatly damaged to be of further use, The car-track and tlmbers in the incline did not take fire, so that the men in the mine were really in no danger had they been allowed to remain. One of the men informed us that he had to make a leap of twenty feet to save himself, the roof falling behind him as he jumped. The mill will of course be rebuilt forthwith. The enterprising’ owners. have ‘sustained -a. heavy loss which must also materially affect the business of the camp, but the property is too valuable to be allowed to lie idle.. The property destroyed cost the owners we think, at least, $50,000, but with the material saved and the ‘reduction in the price of lumber, it can be replaced at much smaller figures. The owuers have always carried an insurance, but to what extent they were insured at the time of the burning we are not advised. Some changes were being made and the condition of the policy is perhaps not understood here at present. least was beyond redemption, and the late experience the town:had had in fire had left everybody shaky on the subject. The volume of flame, smoke and sparks rolling down the ravine in an opposite direction from the town gave, however, some assurance that the exposed portion of the latter would escape. The main body of the crowd that moved forward for the relief ofthe works halted either, on the ridge east of the mill or climbed the reef to the west fearing an explosion of the boiler, while a few, including the proprietors and-hands employed, brooked the danger in its worst form and got as near the fire as it was possible under the circumstances. A NUMBER OF MEN WERE IN THE MINE, And as the mouth of the incline leading to the works was already ablaze, considerable anxiety was felt for their safety. As there was an air-shaft on the west of the reef communiecating with the lower levels in which had been provided a ladder, the exit fortunvately was not wholly cut off. When our reporter arrived on the scene he found Mr. Johnson Barbee, the foreman of the mine, assisted by a number of hands, proceeding to render the men in the mine assistance. Aided by a rope he descended the air-shaft in the dark and groped his way fora long distance in the lower level of the mine, finding thé men at their supper unconscious of what was going on above. The whole party ina very short time were at the top of the shaft and all danger to life happily averted. All hands instantly furned their attention to the works which were now rapidly crumbling to the ground. The fire was now RAGING AT ITS HEIGHT, And for the distance of a hundred yards a tremendous sheet of flame shot heavenward, impressive in its volume and unconquerable in its fury. The wind, which was blowing in heavy gusts, caught the sparks and sent them whirling and eddying down the gulch, setting the sagebrush on fire and adding a melancholy picturesqueness to the scene, The two large tanks of water overlooking the mill} were by this time black with men armed with buckets, who immediateiy formed a line on the hoisting works, and as the water had to be conveyed but a few feet a heavy, well-directed stream was poured on the defensible point. At the same time a force of men under the direction of Mr. Joseph Hoaga few feet to the south of the mouth of the incline were shoveling loose dirt, which mixed with water became an important extinguishing element, killing out the fire rapidly wherever contact with the flames could be effected. By this time the heat had waned slightly at the mill and young Barbee pushed boldly out by | means of the dumping platform.ov erlooking the battery and engine-house and commenced Pe Loox Goods, the tered by hundreds of tongues. The rush to the scene of the conflagration was instantancous and general from every part of the camp. Within two minutes there was a grand illumination which enabled everybody to pick a safe road over the rough and uneven surface lying between the town and the mill. The light*was every Moment becoming more brilliant and sparkling, and the moaning, screech. ing of the Christy, which seemed to-realize fully the distress of its companion, produced at once a picture of distress as mournful as it Mrs.-J. H. Cassidy is lying at the point of death in Salt Lake City.
