Then we dealt with injuries, illness and of course the losing. But they proved something to me and to themselves that they don’t quit, so I knew we were ready for whatever came our way in the playoffs.” McCurdy’s layup with 15 seconds left put Park City up for good against Lehi, allowing the Continued from B-3 State title game assists and three steals. The University of Utah-bound guard shot just 6-for-15 from the field and 7-for-11 from the free throw line. Sophomore Marci Richins added 16 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals in what was her best game of the season. Senior Gracie Watterson finished her career with 11 points and seven rebounds. Millard was led by senior Kobree Penney and her game-high 25 points, but she finished with just four made field goals on the Continued from B-1 Sports briefs PARK CITY SUMMER DAY CAMP REGISTRATION Park City Recreation’s Summer Day Camp will offer early registration to those who live or work in the 84060 zip code. Thursday, Feb. 6 Lost 48-44 to No. 7 Morgan on Friday, Feb. 14 — UHSSA Class 3A State Playoffs, Second Round Miners to pull the biggest upset of all the first round games and win their first playoff game in over a decade. So when Park City pulled up to Bountiful High School on Feb. 21 for its second-round playoff game, the Miners were chockfull of confidence despite facing the No. 10 seed. Despite trailing by double digits at the end of the first quarter, Park City was able to cut the deficit to two points in the fourth quarter before its rally came up short in the end — falling 80-64 in its season-ending loss. “Any game you start out poor in the beginning, especially when facing a team at home that starts out scorching hot, it really makes things difficult the rest of the game,” Purcell said. “We made just enough shots in the first quarter to stay in it, and then we won the second and third quarters so there was a lot of excitement heading into the fourth. But in the end, it was too tough to overcome that slow start. … Especially because we burn though a lot of dry powder just trying to get back into the game, it’s just hard to win those types of games.” With the season over, Purcell is already looking ahead to the future, believing that Park City’s is bright based on the legacy left by this senior class and the group of returners coming back next season. Sophomores Mitch Lind and Carson Tabaracci, along with junior Adam Spink, all return as starters. Tabaracci scored 15 points against Bountiful (5-of-5 from three-point territory), Lind averaged 12 points per game in the two playoff games while Spink led the Miners with 38 made three-pointers on the season. Combine them with juniors Jake Podmilsak, Wyatt Adams and Josh Baniewicz and Purcell feels good about next year. “I’m very familiar with the kids returning, having coached them as JV coach and during the AAU season in the summer as well,” Purcell said. “We will have size, shooters, ball-handlers, a little bit of everything for next year. With our offensive system already in place, we will have a lot of scoring and ammunition from the younger guys.” game. However, she finished 15of-19 from the free throw line. Senior Rylee Miller added 19 points while junior Eliza Swallow finished with 14 points. Despite the rough endings to the last three seasons, Holmes spoke highly of his five-member senior class, crediting them with setting the new standard for North Summit girls basketball. “The message I told the seniors before the game was that it’s been a long time since North Summit had won a state title, and that they were the second generation of pioneers to reach this game,” Holmes said. “Although they didn’t get it done, I can’t express how much I love and appreciate each of them. Their leadership and attitude carried us all year, and it will help carry us next year when we hope to be right back here.” The future is still in good hands with the return of starters Marci and Hadley Richins. Hadley, a junior guard, was third on the team in scoring, averaging 8.4 points, 4.6 assists and 3.7 steals per game. Marci, a forward, finished the season averaging 7.7 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game. Aiding those two is a strong junior class, who will be seniors next season. Holmes has all the confidence in the world, especially after their performance in the state title game. “We had a great senior class this year so the junior class has been waiting a long time for their chance. … And I expect them to take advantage of it,” Holmes said. “We won a lot of games by large margins so they actually played in quite a few varsity game, so they’ll be ready. I don’t have one concern that they wont be ready to play next year. … Because absolutely our goal is to win a state title.” To qualify for early registration, proof of residency or employment in the 84060 zip code must be submitted by March 14 to spencer.madanay@parkcity.org, or brought in person to the front desk at the PC MARC. Registration will open at 9 a.m. on March 15 for both full summer and daily camp registrations. Registration for those living or working outside of the 84060 zip code will open at 6 a.m. on April 1.
