Show Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, February 29-March 3, 2020 B-3 The Park Record Braves are one step closer North Summit falls to Millard in Class 2A state title game RYAN KOSTECKA The Park Record Two years ago, the North Summit girls basketball team lost to Enterprise in the quarterfinals of the UHSAA Class 2A state tournament — then last season, the Braves fell to Kanab in the semifinals. Fast forward to the present and North Summit is now one step closer to that state championship that’s eluded the Braves for over 30 years. But that’s a small consolation prize considering what took place last Saturday at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield. Top-seeded North Summit took a two-point lead heading into the fourth quarter — but the Braves fell 77-75 to No. 2 Millard in a triple overtime thriller. “It was a great opportunity for our girls, everything a state championship game ought to be with the magical moments and coming down to the very end,” said Jerre Holmes, North Summit coach. “We had many opportunities to win that game and we just couldn’t separate ourselves from there. There were things that we could’ve taken care of long before some of the calls that were made in the end. … But the result rests on us in the end and it’s something we have to deal with.” Not wanting to blame the officials for the outcome, Holmes acknowledged how difficult it was to overcome the foul disparity. But he also gave massive credit to his girls for battling through the issues and never giving up. “Every single one of our girls left it all on the court. … They’ll never have the regret that they didn’t give enough effort,” Holmes said. “I’m so proud of our bench for stepping up, keeping us alive and getting us to another overtime. The subs went in and completely battled, I don’t know what more I could’ve asked from any of them. … I’m so proud of every kid on the floor that day.” Once the final horn sounded, Every day your position goes unfilled, you are losing revenue! North Summit, despite being ranked No. 1 in the Class 2A state playoffs, fell to No. 2 Millard 77-75 in triple overtime in the state championship game on Feb. 22 six North Summit players had fouled out of the game, including all five starters and all five seniors on the team. The Braves were whistled for 36 fouls in the game, resulting in 57 free throw attempts by Millard — including the final two attempts that proved to be the difference. Likewise, the Eagles only lost two players from disqualification, one being a starter. North Summit shot just 36 free throws in the game. “I’ve never coached a game where we lost so many players to disqualification because of fouls. … And that’s something that’s nearly impossible to overcome but we almost did it,” Holmes said. “It was an outstanding effort. … And if we would’ve won that game with six of our main players on the bench, there would’ve been a movie about it. It was a storybook of a game, just not a storybook ending.” Senior Kennady McQueen, arguably the best player in the state regardless of classification, finished with a team-high 20 points, adding five rebounds, five The Park Record will get you the best local applicants—plus, we have digital options to help get the word out further.
