Discussions will preceed each performance Submitted by Ballet West A Utah and Ballet West premiere, John Cranko’s legendary story of love and betrayal, “Onegin” [oh·Nyay·gen] will captivate audiences April 5-13 for just seven performances at The George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater. Based on Alexander Pushkin’s dramatic verse novel, “Eugene Onegin,” the ballet tells the story of an arrogant aristocrat, Onegin who rejects the love of Tatiana, a naïve, bookish country girl, only to realize -- upon meeting her years later -- he had thrown away the only woman who ever truly loved him. By this time, Tatiana is married and more mature, and she rejects Onegin. Cranko created the three-act work while directing Germany’s Stuttgart Ballet in 1964. With “Onegin,” he secured his place in the pantheon of great 20th century choreographers. Today the ballet holds a special place in the repertoire of a select few companies around the world who are entrusted and licensed to perform at the artistic apogee the work requires. “It is an honor and humbling for the Stuttgart Ballet -- who protect the Cranko works -- to authorize Ballet West to perform one of his most beloved ballets,” said Ballet West Artistic Director Adam Sklute. “I first saw ‘Onegin’ in 1985 and it has stayed with me. With heart melting music and glorious sets and costumes, this mammoth production is a passionate and powerful piece of dance theater that requires great theatrical and technical strength from the entire company. Its magic takes hold of the audience from the first moments and builds to an intense dramatic ending. It is an honor to present this in Utah for the first time -- a dream come true for me personally.” In conjunction with “Onegin,” Ballet West offers pre-performances discussions called Warm Ups.
