CEO Sarah Hirshland announced those changes to the USOC staff Wednesday as part of a reorganization designed to make the approximately 400-person operation more responsive to athletes. To change that dynamic, Hirshland will begin the search for a leader of a new Athlete Services Department, which will be designed as a one-stop Continued from B-4 Skiers win at Idaho races On Sunday, the plan was to run a women’s race at 10:45 a.m. and a men’s race at 1 p.m. Again, Mother Nature threw a wrench in the schedule. With more snow overnight, the poor visibility and light snow flurries did not allow the race to start on schedule. After many delays, the women’s race commenced at 1 p.m. with a twice-lowered start. Even with the fog, the girls set the tone for the day as they charged down the course with impressive speed. Skiing the bad-girl line, Mary Bocock of Rowmark clearinghouse for athletes to deal with off-field issues. For years, many have complained about finding themselves lost in the Olympic bureaucracy when it came to everything from seeking health care and opportunities for their futures to lodging complaints about sex abuse and unfair treatment by coaches and administrators. On the sports-performance side, Adams will replace Alan Ashley, who was fired in December after the release of a report that concluded he didn’t elevate concerns about alleged abuse by gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar when he first heard of it in July 2015. A concern that came up repeatedly in the report: The USOC was more worried about medals than the welfare of the Olympians who won them. Adams, who has appeared before Congress in one of its several hearings about sex abuse, will continue to run the Paralympic sports operation and will take over most of Ashley’s old duties, including maintaining relationships with national governing bodies – the individual sports whose athletes come under the USOC umbrella every two years for the Olympics. Also on Wednesday, chief external affairs officer Patrick Sandusky announced he was leaving to take a senior vice president job at Madison Square Garden Company, where he’ll be in charge of communications for the Knicks and Rangers. Sandusky joins Ashley, CEO Scott Blackmun, chief marketing officer Lisa Baird, chief development officer John Denny and chairman Larry Probst in leaving the USOC over the past year. Hirshland, chosen last July to lead the USOC out of turmoil related to the sex-abuse cases, will have eight people directly reporting to her, including one in a newly created position of chief of staff. That person will manage the CEO’s office and oversee international relations and the USOC’s dealings with the LA 2028 organizing committee. earned the top podium spot with a time of 1 minute 9.64 seconds. Mia Hunt of Park City Ski and Snowboard (PCSS) also showed hustle and earned third place. Looking at the U16 field, other notable finishes by PCSS female athletes include Kennedy Heavrin in eighth, and Annika Drivdahl in 10th. For the boys, it was a day of dominance for PCSS. Justin Bigatel, recently home from a competition in Slovenia, won the race with a time of 1:06.78. Letting the skis go, three other PCSS racers earned podium spots with Jack Pollard in second, Gunnar Travis third, and Benny Brown fourth. PCSS showed they have speed with three other racers in the top 15: Tay Polster in seventh, TJ Weaver in eighth, and Dylan Thompson 12th. With cloudy skies and cold temperatures, the women’s second and final race started late morning Sunday. Mia Hunt of PCSS was fantastically fast, capturing first place with a time of 1:08.73. She shared the podium with teammate Kennedy Heavrin who took fifth. Three other PCSS female racers were in the top 15: Madison Kaiserman eighth, Annika Drivdahl 11th, and Fiona Sawyer 14th. For the men, it was a repeat for Justin Bigatel, winning for the second day in a row. It was another sensational day for PCSS male racers, with Gunnar Travis capturing second and Jack Pollard third. Tay Polster was just off the podium in sixth. Also skiing into points to qualify for champs were: Benny Brown in seventh, TJ Weaver in ninth, and Jake Rogers in 15th. Despite the difficult weather conditions, Park City Ski and Snowboard alpine racers rose to the top at the Trudi Bolinder Super G qualifier.
