Show C5 The Emery County Review, Tuesday, September 16, 2008 OUTBACK Fishing Big Changes in Store for Scofield Anglers In an effort to fight the explosion of the Utah chub at Scofield Reservoir, the Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is proposing changes in fishing regulations for Scofield Reservoir anglers in 2009. Every year, the DWR conducts gill-netting surveys at major reservoirs to evaluate the health of that fishery. In 2006, fisheries biologists counted an average of two chubs per net at Scofield Reservoir. The number of chubs per net jumped to 26 in 2007. Then in 2008, the chub population increased to 205 per net! The DWR first responded to the presence of chubs in the reservoir in 2005 when 105,000 tiger trout fingerlings were stocked. An increase in the trout limit was initiated in 2007 to thin what was determined to be an overabundance of fish in the reservoir and to increase overall growth rates. The increased growth rates should have produced more large predators in the long run; however, the unexpected rapid increase in chub numbers necessitated more drastic action. Beginning in 2009, the DWR is proposing regulations, like those imposed at Strawberry Reservoir, where a chub war has been underway for several years. It will be proposed that the trout limit be lowered to four fish. Within that four fish limit, there will be special protection for cutthroat and tiger trout, which are needed to maximize chub predation. Anglers will be able to keep only one cutthroat or tiger trout under 15 inches, and only one cutthroat or tiger trout over 22 inches. All cutthroat and tiger trout between 15 and 22 inches must be immediately released. Rainbow trout will not be given special protection as they are not effective predators. This proposal among others is being proposed to fight the battle of illegal fish introductions across the state. Proposed changes for 2009 were discussed at the September round of Regional Wildlife Advisory Council meetings. If you were not able attend the RAC meeting but would like to com- ment, you may email comments to your regional sportsmen repre- sentative. Fly fishermen have had the best luck in the early morning or late evening from a tube or pontoon. Todd suggests slow-trolling near the dam with a #10 olive leech pattern. CLEVELAND RESERVOIR: Tom Ogden fished on 9/3 and had good luck with 13-15 inch rainbow trout. He used a fast-sinking line tipped with a soft hackle wet fly pattern of his own creation. Tom described the fly as a #8 beadhead black, purple & red nymph with a soft hackle and soft black marabou tail. Tom fished in 12-18 feet of water and found the most fish in the southwest corner of the reservoir. His catch rate was five fish per hour. DUCK FORK RESERVOIR: Conservation Officer Casey Mickelsen reports that the bite has dropped off considerably. He suggests trying a variety of flies and lures, until the right terminal tackle is found. ELECTRIC LAKE: The catch rate has been variable, but is picking up. Conservation Officer Ben Riley reports that Electric may soon outstrip Scofield as a preferred fishing destination. FERRON RESERVOIR: Officer Casey Mickelsen indicates that fishing is better in the early morning with a variety of PowerBait colors or with worms and green marshmallows. HUNTINGTON CREEK: Aquatics Biologist Kenny Breidinger fished the left fork last Saturday. He had numerous strikes and landed eight trout. The majority were caught on a beadhead hare’s ear nymph. He caught the rest with a grasshopper pattern. Because the water was turbid, Kenny suggests that anglers try something with a little flash. On the right fork, Todd Munford recommended a #18 Griffiths or #18 Royal Wulff. The water is clear below the dam, so a stealthy approach and light presentation is important. Work the creek upstream to reduce visibility. MAMMOTH RESERVOIR: Last week, Tom Ogden fished the upper end in 12-20 feet of water. He used fast sinking line and a #8 beadhead black & green soft hackle wet fly with a black marabou tail. All tiger trout ranged from 13-17 inches. Tom opened the stomach of the largest trout and found it to be full of snails. Tom’s catch rate was four fish per hour. Mammoth Reservoir is closed to the possession of cutthroat trout or trout with cutthroat markings. JOES VALLEY RESERVOIR: Water sports dominate. Fishing is expected to improve with the onset of winter. All trout from 15-22 inches must be immediately released. The trout limit is two, only one can be over 22 inches. LASAL MOUNTAINS: Conservation Officer Tj Robertson reported good fishing at Dark Canyon with orange or rainbow PowerBait or nightcrawlers with salmon eggs. Medicine Lake has been fair to good with spinners or PowerBait in green or orange. Hidden Lake has produced fair to good fishing with typical baits. Don’s Lake is mossy, but offers good-sized brook trout for anglers able to get through it. Recently, Aquatics Biologist Darek Elverud caught 10 bass at Kens Lake. Most measured under 12 inches, except for one exceptional largemouth that stretched 17 inches and weighed three pounds. Dark green plastic worms seem to be the best bass catchers. SCOFIELD RESERVOIR: Recent creel surveys reveal better bank fishing on the southeast side.
