Show C1 Life Is The Emery County Review, Tuesday, September 16, 2008 Swell Emery and Carbon Counties, Utah u Living in the San Rafael Swell Area u a Mammoth Success E Josie Luke arlier in the year, organizers of the CEU Prehistoric Museum’s first Mammoth Marathon had hoped to attract around 100 runners to the event. Perhaps they did not fully take into account the draw the beauty of the San Rafael Swell would provide-- on race day, over 360 runners competed. “Overall the event was a great success! We had many more runners than we ever dreamed we would,” said race organizer Dwayne Huffaker. “People traveled from all over the country and Canada to participate in this event. Over 40 percent of our runners came from outside the state of Utah.” Racers came to the event from both the eastern and western United States, including Hawaii, and from Ontario and British Columbia, Canada. They were treated to the scenery of what many refer to as the “Little Grand Canyon”. Huffaker reported, “We’ve heard nothing but compliments from the runners about how beautiful the course is, how well supported the race was, and how friendly the volunteers were. Most runners we spoke with after the race already have plans to come again.” Runners met Sept. 14 at the Huntington City Park and were then bussed to the starting lines for the races, marathon, half marathon and 10K, with all three finishing near the Swinging Bridge. With beautiful weather and scenery, the marathon proved to draw 126 runners, but Continued on Page C2.
