Show C6 The Emery County Review, Tuesday, September 2, 2008 EVENTS Ancient Calendars Trip planned to area where anicient Americans once viewed Fall Equinox Annalee Thayn On Sept. 22, Richard Seely from Green River is going to travel to Crescent Junction and watch the sun come up to mark the Fall Equinox. It’s a spot where for years Ancient Americans also watched the sunrise on the only two days of the year that the length of the day and the night are equal. The site near Crescent Junction is an astronomical observatory whose builders had knowledge perhaps on par with those who built Stonehenge. Archeoastronomy is the study of an Ancient Culture’s astronomical observations. The John Wesley Powell River History Museum and Seely are in the process of kicking off programs to study the relationships between ancient American rock art and astronomy. Seely is inviting all who would like to see the calendar to join him. Unless the day is too cloudy or too muddy, he will leave the old gas station at Crescent Junction at 6:50 a.m. to be in place to see where a ray from the sun enters a spiral that Ancient Americans carved on the rock to mark the event. You will need a vehicle with high clearance and some water and a snack if you plan to do some additional hiking on your own. There are numerous examples of ancient rock art in the area, some of which requires a strenuous climb to reach. The sun only strikes this spot on these two days of the year and it does so for only a very short period of time, less than 15 minutes. If you plan to photograph the occurrence, please quickly take your picture so that the next person can also take their picture. Seely under the direction of the Museum is hoping in the future to mark all the solstices and equinoxes in the year, and make an event of them. This first field trip will be a test run to see how much interest there is in this type of activity. These Ancient Calendars and Ancient American Rock Art have captivated Seely. He has studied, listened, and learned a lot over the years, and has considerable knowledge. By coordinating these field trips, hopefully more can be discovered and more knowledge shared. The Green River area has many areas of interest that local people may know about, but not the general public. If this trip is successful, other trips will be planned at other local primitive astronomical observatories including: Coal, Black Dragon, and Sego (Thompson) Canyons. Initially each The sun peaks through a rock formation near Crescent Junction during the fall equinox. trip would mark either a solstice or equinox. Future events would include the field trip, and also a discus- sion, speaker, symposium or other events at the Museum or area sites.
