Show Sentinel Guardian of Your Community News WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2010 • A13 Salem conquers Utes Marshall Dunn STAFF WRITER Salem Hills men's basketball was able to extend its region record to 3-1 with a 77-67 win against the Uintah Utes last Tuesday night. The win featured stellar play by London Simonson and Jake Skinner as both players scored 23 points to lead all scorers. The Skyhawk game plan was fairly unorthodox, as Coach Degraffenreid sat all of his starters periodically, giving the younger guys valuable playing time. "We have a group of JV guys, we call them the MFC; it's those five scrappy guys that get in there and they press and get steals and they get two-and-ones and just create some chaos," said Jake Skinner. What does MFC stand for? • "I can't tell you. All I can say is that the last word is chaos," Skinner said. As usual Skinner controlled the tip-off and Joseph Morhman scored immediately to set the pace for the Skyhawks. In response, the Utes stiffened up their defense to force a 9-5 score midway through the first quarter. Skinner, who had picked up his first foul early, picked up his second foul with 0:47 left in the quarter. Tyler Hardy ended the first quarter with a three-pointer from the quarter to cap off an 11-5 run. "We have a group of JV guys, we call them the MFC; it's those five scrappy guys that get in there ... and just create some chaos." - Jake Skinner Salem started the second quarter by sitting their starters and playing the "MFC" for the first three minutes of play. With the starters back in, the Utes were forced into turnovers, which led to a 35-17 lead at half. The first part of the third quarter featured Salem's starters imposing their will on the Utes, at least until the five-minute mark. With five minutes left in the third. Skinner picked up two quick fouls and was forced to sit out with four total. With Skinner out, Uintah was able to score a couple of quick baskets, and came out of a timeout playing the full court press. Salem sat its starters and put in the "MFC" with 1:53 left and took a 50-35 advantage at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter featured a comeback attempt from Uintah, who was able to cut the lead to 63-56 with 2:33 left to play after a fivepoint play, defensive stop and a three-pointer gave the Utes an eight-point swing. Coach Degraffenreid called a timeout and did not hold back showing his frustration to his team. After the timeout, Jake Skinner was put back in the game, and Salem was able to build the lead to 69-59. Down by ten with 1:11 left, Uintah was forced to foul, and Salem did a good job at hitting their free throws to end the game at 77-67. "After dislocating his shoulder, he came back strong and won his match," Shepherd said. In addition, Kaleb Ashworth (145), Cody Duncan (215) and Blake Denning (HW), also qualified to wrestle at UVU. "Cody placed fifth, and Blake placed sixth overall in their weights," said Shepherd. "We're excited to goto state." Shepherd also felt Dalton Fawcett (112) did "a great job, coming within one match of going to state." Salem Hills had seven wrestlers qualify for the state tournament, including at 103 Spencer Davis and Sam Rohbock; at 112 Chase Wilson and Braiden Wilson; at 135 Mckayd Gordon; at 189 Phillip Sorensen; and at 215 Derek Mangelson. "We wrestled hard, but some of us didn't wrestle very smart," said Salem Coach TJ Brindley. "We had five losses ... where we were winning and made a mistake and got pinned, and four out of theJive matches cost that wrestler a chance to get to the state tournament." I The Mighty Dons hit the road last Tuesday night in another rivalry showdown with the Springville Red Devils. After a sluggish first quarter which gave the home team an advantage, SF rallied in the second for 18 points with good defense and big shots, which knotted the score at 25 by halftime. However, the Dons went ice-cold in the third quarter, scoring a mere three points, while Springville began to heat up. The Red Devils won the contest due to great play by 6'5" Sam Schreiner, whose father played hoops for former BYU Coach Roger Reid. Schreiner knocked down some big shots coupled with his partner in crime, 6'7" Matt Sumsion, who grabbed many boards. Spanish played with intensity, but weren't able to match up down under in this one, and they fell by the score of 48-39. Both teams traded baskets to start the game with the score going back and forth. However, the Red Devils went on an 8-2 run to finish out the first for a 14-7 advantage. The Dons came out hungry to start the second frame. Great defense allowed them to climb back, along with Ren Williamsen, who began to heat up. The senior sharp-shooter connected on several trey balls, which propelled SF for a 9-2 run, which forced a Devil timeout. Spanish got within two and later closed the gap by knotting the score at 25 all to end the half. But the Dons went cold in the third due to turnovers and missed opportunities. In fact, both teams struggled to hold onto the ball as sloppy play was witnessed on each side. Springville managed to score nine in the quarter, while SF came away only with a free throw and a deuce to trail 34-28. The Red Devils resolved to feed their big man down low to begin the fourth, and he delivered. Sumsion helped his team go on a 10-0 run, which put the Dons in a hole, down 46-30, their largest deficit of the contest. And with no shot clock in high school hoops, Springville played keep away by stalling for nearly two minutes on separate possessions just inside half court. Another stat line which summed up the night came at the charity stripe. The Dons shot only three free throws compared to 17 by their counterpart. It just wasn't their night. "We didn't block out," said Coach Cook. "We did a much better job in Spanish with our first game, but we were over-matched tonight. They're a good team." Only two Dons were in double figures on the night. Williamsen (three treys) and Still (six boards) led SF with 13 points apiece. Duke and Hales combined for 12 points.
