Show Wc\t Sentinel Guardian of Your Community News WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 6, 2010 • A l l Dons tame Stallions Chad Vest STAFF W R I T E R The Mighty Dons hit the road last Wednesday to take on a brand new school called Stansbury High, in Stansbury Park, a suburb of Tooele. In a close contest, SF used a stifling defense in the second period to frustrate its opponent before relying on clutch free throws down the stretch, which helped them preserve a much needed road win, 59-53. Both teams came out strong in the first frame with the Stallions leading 14-13 to begin the second. Spanish pulled ahead with some excellent pressure defense, which allowed for some quick fast-break points to take a 28-23 lead at the half. Both teams struggled to get the ball in the hoop in the third period due to some intense defensive play on both ends, as well as some shots that were off the mark. But the Stallions outscored the Dons 12-8 in the quarter to remain within one. Stansbury benefited greatly by the play of Taylor Hunt, who scored a game-high 24 points to lead his team and give them a fighting chance. But Spanish answered the call by remaining calm to take a 36-35 lead heading into the fourth. The Dons made a living on the night at the charity stripe in this one as the red and gray converted 23 of 33 from the line for a respectable 70 percent average, while their counterpart fin-, ished with a 44 percent tally in the same department. For the Dons, two players were in double figures. Ren Williamsen lead SF with 11, while Adam Duke finished with 10. Gavin Hales ended up with eight points, including a threepointer and Travis Still chipped in seven. Spanish now boasts a 4-4 record on the year and will be at home this Friday at 7 p.m. to take on Kearns High School.
