Seven-year-old Brylee has been sick with a Duodenal Duplication Cyst (duplicated bowels) since •October 2008, and is in great need of surgery. On Christmas day, instead of enjoying her presents, Brylee was at Primary Children's Hospital in the ICU with two gallons and two liters of water filling her upper body. Suffering a staph infection, and septic shock, she was put on life support. Brylee's condition is so rare that she will only be the second child to go through the surgery, the first being performed on a child only two months ago in Germany. Brylee's family has been working with John Hopkins Hospital in Maryland for help, but "No one knows what to do with this," said Brylee's mother, Amber Ferre. The family has been hoping to stay in the states for the surgery, but Amber said, "If John Hopkins can't help, we'll have to go to Germany." Susan Hayes, owner of Primrose Retreat, first heard about Brylee when Amber brought her younger daughter, Libbie, in for a birthday party. Brylee was at the hospital during the party and was not able to attend, but several days later Amber brought her girls in once again, and Brylee told Susan her story. "We were looking for a cause, and she just kind of fell into our hands," said Susan. She recently accomplished another literary milestone — having her first book published. "When Hearts Conjoin" tells the story of the Herrin twins, Kendra and Maliyah, and their miraculous journey from being born conjoined from midtorso down, to the surgery that separated them and their progress since. Staheli co-wrote the book with Erin Marie Herrin, the twins* mother. The authors held a book launch, hosted by Richard Paul Evans, Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at the Magnolia Grove Reception Center in South Jordan. Staheli heard Herrin speak at a conference, where she mentioned the book. Staheli wished she could write it, but Herrin was already working with another author. As fate would have it, things didn't work out with the first two authors, and Staheli was approached by Evans and Karen Christofferson about the possibility of writing the book. "I did a sample chapter ... and the. next thing I knew, 1 was writing the book," Staheli said. Herrin liked Staheli's writing style and approach to the sensitive subject. "She had a better feel for what I actually wanted," Herrin said. Herrin had been working on the book for close to two years.
