Cami Robinson picked up another victory as she held Springville to just six hits and three runs over six innings of play. Spanish Fork's bats were just too much for the Red Devils as -the. Dons ended-the contest in six innings 13-3. This week for the Dons will be equally busy as they host American Fork Tuesday, then travel to Lone Peak and Pleasant Grove Wednesday and Thursday before returning home Friday for a non-region match up with 4A power Tooele. The Dons look to go undefeated in region, however, two wins in their final four games will give them at least a share of the region title. Soccer Dons split games Debra Frehner STAFF WRITER •;K Spanish Fork High School soccer team returned to the field after a week off for Spring Break and split the games with one win and one loss. It was a sunny day on April 22, when the Lehi Pioneers rolled into town. A battle for the ball broke out in the goal area, but Tanner Tagg was able to clear the ball. Lehi drove it back for the first score. The goalie's kicked the ball back and forth across the field to each other a few times. The ball crossed in front of the Lehi goal and Riley Dinehart was able to punch it in on a great follow through for the first Dons'goal. As Lehi neared the SF goal, goalie Chet Harmer got hit in the face with the ball, but a quick-acting Dan Gillie cleared the ball out. Lehi took a corner kick and they achieved their second goal. Arturo Hernandez got a great shot that skimmed the outside of the net. The Pioneers started churning and collected their third goal. At the start of the second half, Lehi made a quick score over the tips of Harmer's fingers. Jorge Chacon turned a penalty kick into the second score for the Dons. On Friday, April 24, the Spanish Fork Dons traveled to American Fork to meet the Cavemen. Jorge Chacon got injured and had to be removed from the field, but was able to return later. Luis Vazques helped out on the field while Chacon caught his breath. AF took a penalty kick that crossed the goal, but a swift save by <Lucas Lima cancelled that attempt. In the second half, after keeper Chet Harmer had saved several goal kicks, he was diving for the ball, and got kneed in the face. It was a major injury, and it took a while for him to be removed from the field. Karim Tapia stepped in to fill the keeper's position. The Dons caught fire as Cameron Bardsley chased the ball to the outer corner and slid to keep the ball in bounds. He kicked the ball across the goal box for Jorge Chacon to club it in. There was a lot of energy on the field. Riley Dinehart made a long pass, and Arturo Hernandez made a goal, but it was called back, because of off sides. In the final moments of the game, Hernandez crossed the ball in front of the goal and Dinehart followed it in for the goal. The Dons won the game 2-0. It was an exciting win, but as the game ended, Harmer was being taken from the field in a golf cart. The team ran off the field, chasing the cart to check on Harmer. The Dons are a team that really cares about each other. The coaches have taught them respect. They dedicated the win to Chet Harmer and wish him a speedy recovery. Samantha Beck / Spanish Fork News USING YOUR HEAD: Salem's Justin Sly gets a header in their final home game. SHHS wraps up season Salem Hills had three soccer matches last week. The varsity went 2-1 on the week while the JV was a perfect 3-0. On Wednesday, April 22, Salem Hills hosted Juan Diego for their last home match of the season. The Skyhawks played inspired soccer. They dominated the match from beginning to end, outshooting Juan Diego 18-7. Juan Diego was winded and on their heels. Unfortunately, Salem Hills did not put enough goals in the net. Juan Diego squeaked out with a win 2 - 1 . Trevor Mortensen scored the lone goal of the match for the Skyahwks with the assist coming from Neal Pemberton. Trevor was the MVP of- the match, Sam Metz and Tyler Kilmer were the super-subs of the game. The JV squad put their perfect region record on the line against the Soaring Eagles from Juan Diego. Mason McAllister notched the first goal of the game with a great cross from Collin Steadman. Jordan Daniels scored the winning goal as Thatcher Lamb sent a great throughball that Jordan took and beat the keeper in a oneon-one. The match MVPs were Mason for his goal and Sklyer Hughes for his stellar defense. Supersubs were Jordan and Brad Holdaway, who played his best game of the season. On Friday, April 24 the Skyhawks travelled to Price to play Carbon. Salem Hills possesses better talent and skill than Carbon, but those Dinos are the Achilles' heel for the Skyhawks. Carbon held the Skyhawks to a 0-0 tie after the first half, just as they did the first time the two teams met. The Skyhawks stepped up their level of play in the second half. Bjorn Bader sliced his way through the defense down the left wing and sent a ball in front of the goal, where Trevor Mortensen met the ball and made a nice flick past the goalkeeper. Ten minutes later, the Skyhawks were awarded a penalty kick, which Payden Pemberton drilled home. At the close of the match Mac Marrelli sent a ball through the defense that Jordan Daniels ran onto and put it home in the back of the net, recording his first varsity goal of the season. The Skyhawks walked away with a 3-0 victory. Brandon Williams and his defense earned their seventh shutout of the season. MVPs of the match were Boyce Weber and Mat Poulsen for their outstanding defense. Super-Sub was Mac Marrelli for assisting the final goal. The JV team also struggled in the first half with Carbon, only coming out with a 1-0 lead thanks Kevin Fisher notching his first goal of the season with the assist coming from Justin Kilmer. The boys made adjustments at halftime and came roaring out in the second half. In the first five minutes, Nate Parker added goal number two from the PK spot and Collin Steadman lasered a beautiful left-footed shot from his wing position. Midway through the half, Payden Pemberton used smart thinking and took a quick free kick from the top of the box before the defense could set up and scored an easy goal. Payden then assisted Matt Strong for the final goal of the match. Goalkeepers Nate Jellum, Isaiah Isaacson and Dalton Petersen each shared time in the net for the shutout. Salem Hills 5, Carbon 0. Saturday morning the Salem Hills boys rose early and traveled to Mt. Pleasant to play North Sanpete. The Skyhawks wanted to improve their slow start from the night before and attacked quickly. Three minutes into the game Boyce Weber served a ball into the box that Jordan Daniels punched in for the score. Two minutes later Payden Pemberton penetrated to the end line and placed a shot across the goal line that Jordan Daniels tapped in for a second goal, Another two minutes later, Andres Reyes scored off a gorgeous free kick from about 35 yards out for a 3-0 lead in just under 10 minutes of play. The Skyhawks dominated the game, only allowing four shots from North Sanpete the entire game. Justin Sly made a spectacular sliding kick to preserve the shutout. Just before the first half, Andres Reyes assisted Mac Marrelli for goal number four. In the second half, the Skyhawks were awarded two PKs that Tannon Bradley and Bjorn Bader each scored. Mac assisted Payden Pemberton on a goal as well. Bradon Williams and the defense earned shutout number eight for the season. MVP of the match was Jordan Daniels with super-sub Mac Marrelli. The JV were looking to complete their run of the Region 8 table a perfect 8-0, and they did so with a score of 8-0. Eight different players scored goals with four of those being assisted. Matt Strong started the goal-scoring in the first minute, followed by Nate Parker, Justin Kilmer, Collin Steadman, Zac Darling and Payden Pemberton to make it 6-0 at half. Mason McAllister had two assists and Collin and Kevin Fisher each assisted goals in the first half. Second-half goals were scored by Mason and Jordan Daniels. Nate Jellum and Isaiah Isaacson earned the shutout. The varsity finished region play in third place, with an overall record of 8-5-1. They are headed to state playoffs this Wednesday, April 29 against the secondplace team from Region 10. The JV finished first in region play a perfect 8-0 with an overall record of 13-1. SAM'S PREP OF THE WEEK Taggart Lunceford - Senior - Baseball • Catcher Taggart Lunceford is the son of Sam and Joan Lunceford of Salem. Lunceford came up big for the Dons at the plate this past week. He went 2-4 and had 3 RBI against AF on Wednesday.
