Show ports Covering what matters most A10 • WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22, 2009 Dons go up against nation's finest John Jackson STAFF W R I T E R The Spanish Fork Dons baseball team traveled to southern California to play in tournament against some of the nations toughest teams. The tournament, titled The Anderson Bat National Classic, is played on the campus of Cal State Fullerton against teams from coast to coast. The Dons lost three games, but did come away with a win against the #6-ranked team in the country. The Don pitching staff was represented on the all-tournament team as Chase Castleberry and Adam Duke were selected to represent Spanish Fork. Even though they lost three games, the Dons gained valuable experience against the nation's best that will help them as they continue region play. GAME 1 Palm Beach Central, Fla. (#11 ESPN nation rank) 3 Spanish Fork 1 The Dons got off on the right foot by taking the lead in the first inning. Trevor Randolph hit one that was misplayed by Palm Beach. Randolph advanced to sec- ond and scored on a fielder's choice hit by Braden Warren. Unfortunately for the Dons, the next hit for them would not come until Warren's third-inning single. The Don bats again went silent until the sixth when Warren led off with another single. Adam Duke followed Warren's hit with a single of his own, and a walk to Taggart Lunceford loaded the bases with two outs. The Dons were not able to score any runs as the next hitter struck out to end the threat. Chase Castleberry was the man on the hill for the Dons. Castleberry held a nationally-ranked team to three runs on five hits. Castleberry added six strike outs to boost his all-tournament team resume. Palm Beach got their runs in the second with a two-run home run, and in the third with a walk and RBI single. GAME 2 Jesuit, Calif. (#9 ESPN national rank) 11 Spanish Fork 9 The Dons could not overcome an early deficit as they fell behind 5-0 in the first inning. Get your tickets today! >•, --.^p* HITPARADE: Salem Hills' baseball team hosted Delta Tuesday, April 14. The game proceeded despite lessthan-desireable weather conditions. The Skyhawks ensured both teams would not remain outside longer than necessary, ending the game in the fifth 11-1 with the 10-run rule. Salem scored four in the first and added seven in the third to seal the deal. The Rabbits got their only run in the first. Pictured, above, is winning pitcher Tayler Peterson.
